Song Analysis: I M Never Going To Give You Up

“I’m never going to give you up”. This is how Rick Astley feels about his lover who he wrote the song about. He loves this person with all his heart. There is no one else in the entire world who he cares this much about. Mr. Astley sung the song with his deep and booming voice as a love song comparable to Romeo’s attempt during the balcony scene of their play. His wish for love is never more heartfelt than during the chorus of his complicated love song. The subtle symbols of objects standing in the way of their love but also objects that symbolize their love. Each object such as a cross, large glass windows, or ballroom each mean something different and have their own importance and significance. But it is obvious that they share a connection.
Mr. Astley sings the lyric “You know the rules and so do I” which is clearly a line to his lover about why they can’t be together right now. A few times during the music video a catholic cross can either be seen in the background or other objects are in the pattern of a cross. This is supposed to symbolize their faith or their families faith that is the wedge keeping them apart. They could be cast out of their families and/or the church for going against what they think is “right”. But also the man in Mr. Astley’s video is African American and the reason that they aren’t together is because society frowned upon people loving someone from another race. But also again their families might not approve of who they are seeing. This seems like a non issue today but society has come a long way in accepting things that today we think are normal. But also they could be from different social classes and this could sadly harm people's view on their love. The difference in appearance between Mr. Astley and his lover is quite obvious because they dress like they are from two different social classes. You love who you love and you can’t change it.
