In this paper, I will discuss how certain sociology concepts apply to the song “Wrong Way” by Sublime. I will analyze parts of this song as it applies to norms, values, structure, social facts, and human agency for understanding society. I will discuss certain theories of sexuality and how they explain the narrative that is told in the song. I will discuss how theoretical explanations and concepts can change how a person would view this song.
Norms are human behavior that is expected from society. Some examples of norms that are used in our society are leaving a tip for your waitress, making eye contact when speaking to a person, saying thank you when someone opens the door for you. I believe this was implying that her family environment influenced her behavior and lack of values. I imagine the girl in the story was never around people with high morals. The verse “He needed money so he put her on the street” applies to a social fact. This is a social fact because it is an action that contributed to her lifestyle and behaviors. Because the family needed money, he put her on the street to make money which ultimately led to her lifestyle.
The verse “She took a hike; Don’t matter if I like it or not; Because she only wants the wrong way,” applies to human agency. This verse is stating that she made an individual decision to return to her previous lifestyle. Even though social structure and social facts influenced her behavior and lifestyle, she still has an individual decision on her behaviors and lifestyle. I believe once a person is stuck in a routine of behaviors it becomes difficult to change them even if it leaves you with an unhealthy
