Theme: Silence
Topic: How is silence depicted in the following chapters: Effita, A story with no name, Nathan and Miss Minnie?
In the novel Songs of Silence the theme silence is portrayed in the various chapters and shows us the different reasons and reactions to silence. Silence is a major theme in the novel but in these particular chapters it gives us a clearer understanding to what is happening. The novel suggests to us that silence is not just the absence of sound, but is in itself a kind of expression. In the chapters Effita, A story with no name, Nathan and Miss Minnie silence is portrayed.
In the first chapter ‘Effita’ we encountered silence in two particular instances which caused Effita to be silent. When the narrator`s cousin was shot by Chisel Bwoy and also the death of Miss Effie`s nephew. These show us what led up to Effie`s silence. ‘ When Miss VeenAnn come out on the road and grab Miss Effie in her collarbone and call her quiet and firm by her right name , “Effita, tap de bawling, no call down no dead pon me pickni, him no dead, doctor she him wi recover”, Effie was devastate, she just sit down braps on the ground at Miss VeenAnn foot, put her arm in her lap and her head on her arm, and cry and cry and cry, weakly in a thin, high voice like a mosquito`s keening’. ‘The time Miss Effie didn`t announce was when her nephew Son Son died. Son Son was in my sister`s class in school and he used to get fits…. Be that as it may, Son Son dead before help could reach him and that was that. The death shake up everybody and especially us children because Son Son was only fourteen and children didn`t die in our district…. At the graveside it was really weird because Effie keep very quiet and people start to get uneasy…. Miss Effie scream out one loud scream fit to wake the dead and tear off her hat and her shoes and jump down into the grave…. “Jesus Jesus Hallelujah! Hallelujah Woie! Woie! Woie!
