The strategy of having Sonny's brother tell the story shows us that his attitude and negative feelings and disapproval of his brother changes as the story progresses. The story starts off with Sonny's brother's finding out that Sonny had been arrested for heroin, and his anger and shame is clearly displayed. When Sonny made the decision to wanting to be a jazz musician, he worked at it seriously and studiously. When he was living with his sister-in-law's family while studying music, for example, they said that the amount of determination he had to jazz music was so heartfelt "it wasn't like living with a person at all, it was like living with sound." However, as the story progresses, at the end of the story that the brother begins to understands and realize something of the massive appeal of jazz music to his brother by when finally the narrator goes to the club where his brother plays to hear him the first time, he sees how his feelings towards his brother had been wrong and was prejudiced as shown by his own feelings when he listens to the type of music his brother plays. While listening to his brother play he goes on to describe his feelings “I seemed to hear with what burning he had made it his, and what burning we had yet to make it ours, how we could cease lamenting. Freedom lurked around us…

Since I was a small child, around two years old, I have had the privilege and sometimes the complete terror of being an older brother. This has been a rewarding experience for me, and has given me many learning opportunities and teaching opportunities in my fairly short life. Because of my experience as an older brother I was more fully able to understand and appreciate the struggles and triumphs that the two brothers in "Sonny's Blues" endured. While I have never personally had to deal with the extreme experiences and responsibilities that the narrator dealt with, I can still relate simply as an older brother myself. Throughout the short story I found myself questioning how I would deal with Sonny if he were my brother. I finally came to the conclusion that if I had dealt with Sonny, I would have probably handled him in nearly the same way as the narrator did. While I questioned his judgment at times, I feel that the older brother played his role well or at least to the best of his ability. Regardless of how the narrator dealt with his brother the final outcome is the most important aspect of the story, and it shows that brotherhood is capable of overcoming hardship and misunderstanding because it is so important in regard to human survival and success. The fact that brotherhood prevails over all things is an important theme, and one that rings so very true.…

The narrator’s mother asks him to protect Sonny and to serve as his brother’s keeper by stating, “You may not be able to stop nothing from happening. But you got to let him know you’s there” (85). The vibrancy between the two brothers echoes the strained relationship between Cain and Abel in the Bible. After the brutal murder of Abel, Cain asks God whether he is supposed to be his brother’s keeper. In the same context, the narrator is present with a similar conflict. The narrator fails to obey his mother’s command to take care of Sonny by turning his back on him and failing to respond to his brother while he is in prison. In the opening paragraph, the narrator states, “I read about it [Sonny’s arrest] in the paper, in the subway, on my way to work” (Baldwin 74). According to James Tackach’s excerpt, “The Biblical Foundation of James Baldwin’s Sonny’s Blues,” “If the narrator had to rely on a newspaper report to become aware of Sonny’s trouble, then he could not have been keeping his promise to his mother to care for his younger brother” (Tackach 114). Although narrator refused to call his younger brother after his arrest, there is a strong reconciliation with Sonny near the end of the story where the narrator accepted Sonny’s invitation to attend a piano…
