This often times leads to one seeking advice from their peers. While some peers may give advice leaving people open to options, others may try to impose their idea of successfulness on them. “Sonny’s Blues” demonstrates that hardships do not deter success.

Hence, stopped playing the piano; the narrator describes Sonny’s reaction to Isabel’s mother’s remarks. “For he had to see his presence, that music, which was life or death to him, had been torture for them and that they had endured it, not at all for his sake, but only for mine”(265-266). One day Isabel goes into Sonny’s room and realizes all of his records were gone and she knew he was too. “He went as far as the Navy could carry him” (266). The narrator was unaware of Sonny’s whereabouts until Sonnyhe sent him a postcard from Greece. Sonny’s decision to go to the Navy not only gives him a voice, it also forces his brother to realize that Sonny will ultimately dictate his own future despite what he (the narrator) or anyone else may think. Sonny’s decision to join the Navy should have forced his brother to realize that Sonny was indeed becoming a man; yet the narrator refuses. Even after Sonny’s return from the Navy the narrator is still in denial. “He was by then, of course, but I wasn’t willing to see it” (266). It is not until the narrator decides to go watch Sonny play the piano at the nightclub that he realizes why Sonny loves to play and what exactly Sonny has been through. As a result, the narrator was able to experience Sonny’s life story through his music. “Freedom lurked around us and I understood, at last, that he could help us to be free if we would listen, that he would never be free until we did”(275). After they died nobody really knew what to do with Sonny. His parents were gone and his brother was still enlisted in the army. Sonny was forced to live with his brother’s girlfriend’s family. Before Sonny’s brother left to the army they had a conversation about what Sonny was going to do with his life. Sonny wanted to drop out of school, learn to play the piano, and join a jazz band. His brother wasn’t really accepting of his ideas. Sonny says, “I think people ought to do what they want to do.” (Baldwin 68) Throughout their conversation, Sonny showed his eagerness to get out of Harlem and the same scenery. He was even willing to lie about his age and go to the army with his brother. Sonny was told he could play the piano if he stayed in school. He moved in with Isabel and her family, continued to go to school, and started playing the piano religiously. He played whenever time was allowed. The only thing that seemed to keep him functioning was the piano. Isabel and her family would rarely see him unless he was eating or playing the piano. One day, the family received a letter saying he hadn’t been attending school. He admitted he was going to a white girl’s apartment…

In Baldwin’s short story, “Sonny’s Blues,” the narrator on page 48 comes right out and states, that both of his parents died and he was off to take care of his little brother on his own while still involved in the army. Early on in the story Sonny states on page 51, “I want to be a musician like Charlie Parker, one of the greatest musicians alive.” And the Narrator (Sonny’s brother) states, “You are getting to be a big boy, it’s time to start thinking about your future.” This is just one small example of the first time Sonny was shot down and neglected in his household. Another example, as we learned about before, is when Sonny is living with Isabel and her parent’s and he gets yelled at for doing the only thing that seem right to him, skipping school and playing music. After this incident Sonny completely shut down and turned to a more damaging pain relief, Horse. Later on in the story on page 58, Sonny and his brother are talking about a singer down the street and Sonny says, “When she was singing before, her voice reminded me for a minute of what heroin feels like sometimes -when it’s in your veins. It makes you feel warm and cool at the same time. And distant. It makes you feel in control. Sometimes you’ve just got to have that feeling.” When Sonny say this it really makes me believe that during his whole life he was told what to do and how to do it, and his only family member…

Sonny's brother was very skeptical and decided that supporting his brother was the most important thing to do at this point in their lives. When the older brother heard Sonny play and saw the way people responded to Sonny he realized this is his little brothers passion and life. "There was a long pause, while they talked up in their indigo light and after awhile I saw the girl put a Scotch and milk on top of the piano for Sonny. He didn't seem to notice it, just before they started playing again, he sipped from it and looked toward me, and nodded. Then he put it back on top of the piano. For me, then, as they began to play again, it glowed and shook above my brother's head like the very cup of trembling." This particular scene symbolizes that the feud is over and that the past is gone. Also, that Sonny has finally seen the light and will fight his battle with a heroin addiction and beat it because he knows that he…

The narrator neglected his ways of thinking and thought he was experiencing adolescence. The narrator didn’t just neglect his ways of thinking for the future, but also never listened to what Sonny had to say about anything to try and better him.
