Sonny's Blues Reflection

Walter Gilbert once said “why do we do basic research? To learn about ourselves.” I believe that I learned a lot about myself while writing this research paper and participating in a group presentation. The most important lesson I learned from this research project was written in “Sonny's Blues”. While in the kitchen Sonny and his brother begine to talk about suffering: “‘No, there's no way not to suffer. But you try all kinds of ways to keep from drowning in it, to keep on top of it, and to make it seem-well, like you. Like you did something, all right, and now you're suffering for it. You know?’ I said nothing. ‘Well you know,’ he said, impatiently, ‘why do people suffer?’”(). This scene said exactly what many people including myself try
I also helped create the idea behind our talk show and I created the title of our show. The way that my group and I prepared for the presentation was by meeting with each other after class, one week before the presentation. Tough out the day before our presentation we shared ideas through group meeting and we also meet an hour before our inclass presentation to discuss information and to ensure that we were all on the same page. I was unable to make it in on time for the last meeting but i did communicate by phone calling my group. I interpreted the story in a way that allowed Sonny to be more than the stereotypical poor drug addicted black man. I believe that in presenting my group with this perspective we were able to not demonise his actions. I was able to project the idea that Sonny was a victim of life's harsh environments and circumstances in the powerpoint that i created. I really want the class to remember the emotions evoked by the images that i selected in the power point. I searched really hard for images that visually could tell the story of Sonny and the narrator that i hope made the presentation more memorable. Although did not suggest a quote i did suggest that the writer Ashley Bonner focus on the relationship between both characters especially the kitchen scene at the end of the
