APPLICANT - SHAH JIMMY
INTENDED MAJOR - MASTER IN HEALTH ADMINISTRATION
SEMESTER APPLYING - FALL 2011

It is a boon for me to be born and brought up in a family where teaching and education are given utmost importance. My family members supported in studies and hard work to acquire real zeal of knowledge which has provided continuous encouragement, guidance and force to me. Taking advantage of this, I have shown extraordinary performance as an all-rounder. From beginning of my carrier, the desire of becoming a doctor and serving humanity existed since my early childhood. I chose Science as my major in the HIGHER SECONDARY CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION, which I passed in the year 2005. I secured admission in BACHELOR OF DENTAL SURGERY(B.D.S.) course in the same year. These marked the beginning of most important phase of my life. I spent 4 years learning basic sciences and clinical sciences, and another 1year doing INTERNSHIP AT A TERTIARY REFERRAL HOSPITAL. During these periods I came across wide spectrum of patients those coming from aristocrat class to those belonging to the lowest socio-economic classes, who have come for treatment from different regions. I want to dedicate myself to this dynamic field of administration, which is of course not as glamorous as the white apron and green coats but the corner stone of any hospital without which it is impossible to run the hospital set-ups. I would like to contribute my efforts for the progress of society with my knowledge in the field of health care administration. Health Administration is one of the important part of B.D.S. This paramedical discipline is considered as the core of the health system, where a Doctor comes in contact with the patient on one hand and the Medical staff on the other. In the era of fast and ever changing

Atul Gawande sees the medical profession more as a business rather than actual healing. Today doctors get so caught up in mess of how much a particular surgery should cost that many forget about the patient’s care. At the beginning of “Piecework,” Gawande recently finished his residency and is looking to become an independent doctor. However, he was conflicted about how much they should pay him. He never thought or acted upon the annual salary of a new doctor before, because most doctors never boast about their yearly income. However, when he did ask certain doctors the conversation “turned out to be awkward…and they’d [mumble] as if their mouths were full of crackers” (Gawande 113). Gawande states that doctors should not have to respond, because their main goal is to take care and save the patients. The author explains certain things have a definite cost and one must follow those costs no matter how extreme they may be.…

In addition to my enthusiasm for investing in young lives, I have done some volunteering as a teaching assistant to get some hands-on classroom experience for formal teaching. My experience at the school allowed me to acquire a number of skills and also help enhance my weaker ones. The key skills and strength that I possess for success include my enthusiasm and dedication to my assigned duties and my ability to support and inspire young people through being a good listener to them and offering appropriate advice. I am also highly skilled in assisting the instructor in supervision of students’ arrival and departure time, performing clerical and record keeping tasks and maintaining discipline of the classroom in the absence of the instructor. One of my greatest strengths is helping maintain a well-disciplined learning environment, with minimal interruptions and maximum productivity. This is achieved by pulling misbehaving students aside, reinforcing positive behaviour, and implementing a reward system.…

Much has happened since I graduated from the School of Public Health in 1986. I achieved my dream of working in a hospital setting when I secured my first job as a Management Accountant at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. There I especially enjoyed developing relationships with managers from many departments as I assisted them with financial reports and budget information. Although I aspired to have enough experience one day to be eligible for an administrative role in a clinical area, my job provided a great opportunity to learn about the inner workings of the…

Also, I would like join organizations like MINSA (Ministry of Health) and work closely with them to spread awareness of health preventions. Also, I would like to implement training to improve the treatment that doctors have towards patients since this is a commons issue that happen in the hospitals between patients and doctors. People demand not be treated in the right way, and I witnessed these conditions firsthand. One day, I went to visit my aunt to the hospital, whom was fight the cancer battle and I observed a bad action that the nurse had toward my aunt when she asked her for a pain pill, the nursed turned around and walked out of the room saying “we are not allow to give you” without any explanation. Doctor shouldn’t make their personal problems part of their professional job. However, implementing these new changes will not be easy. One of the major obstacle I will face, will be trying to implement new rules regarding the doctors’ treatment toward the patients, since they won’t give up easily the way they have been doing their work, just because I foreign say so. But, one way to overcome this obstacle will be with the help of the hospitals’ supervisor, since they are the ones who have control over them. Supervisor should check more the…

Being a naturally compassionate person, I take great pleasure in serving my local community. I participated in an NHS scheme to provide free health-care and advice to the elderly in my area. Living in such a diverse community, I was able to utilise my ability to speak both fluent English and Punjabi by relaying requests and advice by the doctors to the elderly. As a result, my communication skills between the doctors and patients were developed. This event gave me an opportunity to observe and speak to the doctors regarding a medical career.…
