I am currently working as an Optimization Engineer of a Glass Fibre manufacturing firm since the past 12 months after graduating from Manipal XXX in the summer of 2013. While pursuing my high school from Navrachana XXXXX, I was always curious to understand the technology that went behind the operations of various machines. The curiosity of wanting to create something tangible and useful led me to picking Mechanical Engineering as a major from one of the most reputed Private universities of India, XXXXXX.
Throughout my days as an engineering undergraduate, I was associated with XXXX’s official off-road racing team, XXXXXXX. We designed the car, manufactured it, tested it and raced it at the prestigious SAE BAJA 2012 held at XXXXXX. During my tenure, I served as the team manager, responsible for all the aspects of production planning. The management team led by me also formulated a proposal for large scale production of the same car based on commercial feasibility. This helped me to understand engineering from a business point of view, and this instilled in me the curiosity to focus my further projects towards optimization.
As part of my Industrial training and my 8th semester project work, I wished to explore the field of Experimental design as it helped me understand Engineering from a different perspective. I underwent my first internship at XXXXXX, a leading manufacturer of Boilers and Pressure Vessels where I took up a project in optimizing their spot welding process by determining the key process parameters that determined its tensile strength and variability. By adopting various statistical methods developed by Taguchi, specifically the analysis of its loss functions, new production parameters were implemented which increased the strength of the weld by approximately 20%. The success of my project imbibed in me a curiosity to explore various other applications of experimental design by utilizing statistical tools, which was fulfilled

A plywood manufacturer has tasked me with finding a solution to their problem regarding the inconsistency of their laminate cutting process. In order to find out where the problem lies, I will use an experimental design. Experimental design is a formal plan that details the specifies for conducting an experiment, such as with responses, factors, levels, blocks, treatments and tools to be used (Sower, 2011, p. 155). Various experiments will be conducted at the different stages of the production cycle to find the problem.…

Mercedes-Benz is a world renowned company which primarily operated in the luxury market segment before the 1990 recession. Because of the recession in 1990, the luxury market took a hit and Mercedes-Benz struggled with cost efficiency, product development, material purchasing, and problem in adapting changes. A modular construction process was used to produce the AAV. Functional groups with representatives from different areas like marketing, development, engineering, purchasing, production, and controlling were used to design the vehicle and production system. From the concept development to production commencement, it only took 5 years. After comparing existing production lines with various market segments for opportunities, the management discovered the sports utility vehicle market is rapidly expanding. During the project realization phase, engineers designed a prototype which was viewed by customers to let engineers know how they received it. The customers were also asked to rank the importance of various features such as safety, comfort, economy, and styling. During the production phase, the accounting system served as a controlling mechanism to ensure…
