Sometimes in life we experience things that put our life into perspective. It is like watching an item on the news about hunger in a third world country, while eating a three-course meal. People have a way of always comparing their own life to the lives of others. As humans we so often see life as a linear process. We follow majority and norm of the society. Previous in time the divorce of a married couple was not acceptable and husband and wife remained together no matter what. Today we experience an increasing number of divorces. Women do no longer depend on their husbands to provide for them and they are capable of making their own money. The short story “Sorry for Disturbing You” by Richard Knight portrays a meeting between two strangers, Ian and Michael. Ian doesn’t know what an impact this fortuitous meeting is going to have on him, when letting the drunk and confused Michael into his home. The story deals with the feelings of guilt and regret, and the main theme is regretting some of the choices you have made in life.
In the short story we are introduced to Ian who is a husband and a father. His wife Karen is currently living with her mother, and Ian is at home taking care of their daughter Corinne. The effect of the stranger’s life makes Ian reflect about his own situation. Through the conversation between Ian and Michael Phelps, we learn about Michael’s life. Michael is older than Ian and Michael’s daughter was the former owner of the house, which Ian and his wife Karen now own. Ian concludes that Michael’s alcoholism is a result of the discovery of an affair that Michael had and the discovery of the infidelity leads to the separation between Michael and his wife. Through Ian’s interpretation, the infidelity was the reason to Michael’s exclusion from his daughter’s wedding. The story of Michael’s life might lead to anxiety for Ian, because he and his wife are currently separated. Ian fears that he would end up like Michael, being
