Christianity plays a large role in "Soul Surfer," the true story of Bethany Hamilton who lost her arm in a shark attack in 2003.
Bethany's family and friends are a huge support system for her. Her faith in God is what gets her through the horrific time that she has trying to overpower the grief of losing her arm.
“Soul Surfer” could be compared to the movie “The Blind Side” which was filmed in 2009. Michael Oher and Bethany Hamilton both have a lot in common. They are both are young and are trying to overcome something because of a sport. Bethany is struggling because of an injury while Michael is struggling with the past and the way he was brought up. They are both trying to accomplish a dream and both movies are an inspiration and are a true story. Sandra Bullock, the mother of Michael in “The Blind Side” and Bethany’s parents both have a lot in common with the influence that they have on their children.
Bethany basically lives in the ocean and is always training for a surf competition. In the middle of training for the next competition, she is attacked by the shark in Hanalei, Hawaii. She is rushed to the hospital and is awoken with serious pain and without her arm. Days after the competition, Bethany is trying to figure out when she is going to get back on her boarch and continue to surf. She doesn't let the pain or scare of the shark scare her from getting back in the water. The setbacks of only having one arm are very minor and she doesn't let them get in the way of doing what she loves to do, which is surfing.
The tsunami in Thailand plays a large part in "Soul Surfer." After the shark attack, Bethany and her youth group travel to the country to help clean up and be a light for the children in the local towns. She see's there in Thailand how blessed she is even after her accident.
Bethany is played by Anna Sophia Robb who was recently seen in 2007 as Leslie Burke in the award winning film, "Bridge to Terabithia." Robb
