I. Warmup Questions
1. Coffee beans are crushed into small pieces, water is added to it and the mixture is heated over a flame. What do you think would happen to the coffee bean as it interacts with the water? Explain.
Essentially the warm water will run through the coffee beans and extract its properties. The flavor of the coffee beans would disperse into the water. The water would change color and smell like the coffee beans as these properties are drained from the coffee beans.
2. What would happen to the water if instead of coffee beans, strips of dried seaweed were used? Explain your prediction.
The exact same thing that happened to the coffee beans will happen to the seaweed. The warm water would also cause particular properties of the seaweed to be extracted into the water.

3. Define the following terms:
a. Decant. Slowly pouring a liquid solution from one container into another
b. Filtrate. Passing a substance, usually liquid, through a filter
c. Extract. Using methods such as evaporation or filtration to remove something from a substance
d. Precipitate. A solid that is extracted or removed from a solution
e. Tincture. An alcohol solution of a medicine.
II. Focus Questions
1. How can I make a pharmaceutical product from seaweed?
A pharmaceutical product can be made from seaweed by heating seaweed in water. This would cause the product to be extracted from the seaweed. Then the seaweed can be extracted from the water through filtration. Finally, using evaporation, the product can be extracted from the water.
2. Can a single substance be isolated from a mixture (i.e. seaweed)? What is that substance?
A single substance can be isolated or extracted from a mixture such as seaweed using methods such as filtration and evaporation. The substance would be

Chromatography serves mainly as a tool for the examination and separation of mixtures of chemical substances. Chromatography is using a flow of solvent or gas to cause the components of a mixture to migrate differently from a narrow starting point in a specific medium, in the case of this experiment, filter paper. It is used for the purification and isolation of various substances. A chromatographically pure substance is the result of the separation. Because purification of substances is required to determine their properties, chromatography is an indispensable tool in the sciences concerned with chemical substances and their reactions.…

Most natural products and many commercial preparations are mixtures containing a number of different substances. To obtain a pure compound from such a mixture, you must separate the desired compound from the other components of the mixture by taking advantage of differences in their physical and chemical properties. Acidic or basic substances are often converted to water-soluble salts, which can then be separated from the water-insoluble components of a mixture. In this experiment, we separated the components of a simulated pharmaceutical preparation, making use of their acid-base properties. The Panacetin was weighed at 3.00grams. The filter paper weight was .218 grams. The sucrose weight was 1.389grams. We mixed 25 ml of NaHCO3 with filtrate (Panacetin and Dichloromethane) in a flask. The substance was a cloudy mixture. Next we titrated the filtrate to the separatory funnel. The Dichloromethane was a yellowish color, and the NaHCO3 was a clear residue.…

    Milkweed Report

Milkweed by Jerry Spinelli published September 9, 2003. The book is about a Gypsy kid who has no name. He meets a group of kids and they name him Misha. Another character is Janina who is spoiled and always gets what she wants. Uri is the character who is the boss and he tells everybody what to do. The story takes place in Warsaw, Poland. The time was during World War II when the Nazi’s took control of the Jewish people in Warsaw. In this book you will go with Misha through some of his problems like staying in a refugee camp, celebrating Hanukkah, trying to smuggle food for his adopted family and orphans and how he survived the war. The high point of the story is when the Jews get deported on the trains and Misha and Janina get separated. What happens at the ending of the book is the opposite of what you will think. The author was trying to tell the reader through a kids eyes about the Holocaust. By writing the story and telling it through the eyes of Misha it was easier to feel and experience what they went through and how they were feeling. The author did achieve his purpose because now I know what was happening to the people during this time. I agree with the authors point of view because he went through Misha as the narrator and that helped me understand what the kids and the other people were going through. What affected me was the action of the story by how it made me feel and was very interesting to keep me wanting to read the whole book. When living in the city Misha and the other orphans who are Jews realize what they can and can not do and they are not excepted by the other people. The strong point in the book is when the town Misha goes to gets attacked by the German’s and all the Jew’s are sent to a ghetto. There in the ghetto he meets Janina who he becomes friends with and treats her like his sister. The amount of food in the ghetto becomes scarce so he leaves the ghetto to try and find food for his family. One day him and his family get…
