The best job I had was working at Gila River casino. I worked the night shift from 10pm to 6am, Sunday to Thursday, working 40 hours a week. Working as a security officer the casino was very hard and fast-paced because for security we would have to make sure everyone was safe, check i.d., and walk around the casino floor to see if anyone was stealing money or people sleeping in the bathroom. We would have to check the parking lot for anyone who was doing drugs and trying to break into patrons vehicles. The biggest problems at the casino were the alcohol intoxicated patrons who would get mad and want to fight everyone in the casino.…
Martha’s Vineyard is a small island five miles off the southeastern shore of Massachusetts settled in the mid to late 17th century. For nearly 300 years, from the early eighteenth century to the mid twentieth century, it was home to a remarkably high percentage of deaf Americans who developed their own sign language, Martha’s Vineyard Sign Language. This isolated island allowed sign language to flourish beyond the deaf community, dissolving barriers between deaf and hearing prevalent in the rest of the world.…
In the early 1800's there were many things that were hard to do because there were not machines to do them like we have now. Eli Whitney was the man who invented the Cotton Gin, and made the Cotton production go along ten times faster. Eli Whitney was born in 1765, and grew up on a farm in Massachusetts. When he had grown older, he got a job at a tobacco plantation in South Carolina. But with the growing cotton industry in the south, Whitney's employers turned to growing cotton. Eli Whitney saw how hard it was to grow and manufacture cotton, because it took many hours to get the seeds out of the cotton, then spin into clothing. With the financial help of his employer, he started working on an Invention, and when it was finished, it was called the Cotton Gin. The Cotton Gin's purpose was to get all the seeds out of the cotton a lot…
The Eastern Shore of Maryland is one of the most beautiful places, not only on the East Coast, but in the United States. Given this fact, which most of the locals are painfully aware of, it only makes that the Eastern Shore receives thousands of visitors throughout the year every year. One must wonder however, what exactly it is that brings all of these people to The Shore? First of all, it is a beautiful place to visit; between the views of the water, the wildlife, the historic towns, and the history scattered across each of the unique towns. This makes the Eastern Shore a prime location for low key vacations, as well as destination weddings. Another equally predominant factor to the amount of tourists which come to The Shore is the “local grub.” Everyone who visits The Shore wants to eat Maryland Blue Crabs, oysters, and rockfish. So, how is it that the Chesapeake Bay’s watershed directly impacts the number of tourists who visit The Shore in a…

Pirates, ruthless men and women of the sea. Deriving from all corners of the earth, battling for gold and glory. But, how did this image of pirates enter the minds of many? Romanticism, a word that undoubtedly changed the way the world viewed life, long ago. Treasure Island is a main contender for this topic. Stevenson, gave a reader an opportunity to escape into a new reality. He made pirate stories seem realistic, he shined light on drama between pirates and used factual, justifiable information without losing track of a fictional nature.…
There are some travelers who see a “paradise” as their final destination; however, it may end up to be exactly opposite of what a paradise should be. This can be seen in Alex Garland’s The Beach. The novel is about several backpackers, Richard, Francoise, and Etienne, who come together and travel to an island community, their paradise, within Thailand. Ultimately, the story portrays the idea of a utopia-like society taking a turn for the worst and becoming a dystopia, something that the backpackers would not have expected. Throughout the story, the theme of a utopia turning into a dystopia could be seen through symbolism such as the “cancer” of traveling and the destruction that it brings.…
