Spacing In The Workplace Essay

Spacing in my office is very interesting. In my office there are five professional staff members and seven student workers (depending on the day) in the office at a given time. There is the first secretary, she is completely outside the office and is the first level of contact anyone has when they come to our department; next we have the director’s office, she is the first professional staff member’s office (she has the biggest office), her door is usually open depending on the meeting she is having; next is the second secretary, she is directly in the open space of the office and she does not have a door just a desk in an open space.
Next we have the student members of the media team, they have an office because it was recently vacated by professional staff member that moved departments; next there are the two staff members located in the back of the office, their offices are set up very similar to that of the director just smaller offices. There are also two conference rooms in the back of the office as
Workplace space conveys a lot meaning. In our office, I think they have created an environment in which everyone feels supported but at the same time there are different levels of importance for each person. For example, the secretary who is completely outside of the office, I have to wonder if she ever feels that she is not as important because she is physically separated from everyone else by being outside the office. But at the same time, she is the first person that anyone who enters the office has to see before they can come in to for an appointment to see anyone. I don’t think this chapter has changed how I view space; I think it has only enhanced it. I am very cognizant of my space and how I utilize that to communicate with others. Some people are very okay with people being in their intimate space while others are not. So as communication scholars we have to be self-aware so we do not offend other’s
