The Search Researching spartan women was not that much of a struggle since they were known for their freedom, but researching about specific details about their daily life was a little more difficult. Before I could research spartan women I …show more content…
had to research about the Spartan society to know why and how the spartan women were more dominant than other women in Greece. I came across many sources but I choose only the best ones such as James C. Thompson, ( B.A./M.Ed) , Historian Evan Andrews and Schrader, Helena P.who has a PhD in history. Some obstacles that I had to overcome is finding reliable sources that have the correct information. Many of the sources have very false and invalid information. I overcame these obstacles by using different search terms and by verify each author. I found that by doing this i provided me with the most useful information.
What I Discovered Spartan women enjoyed more freedom and power than other women throughout ancient Greece. Females were able to participate in athletic competitions and games , including wrestling, and dancing. Some of these activities were done without cloths in front of both men and women. Spartan women were allowed to own and manage property.Spartan women had responsibility such as cooking, cleaning and making clothing.Sparta also had slaves but not for ones individual needs but for the city as a whole .
Marriage was important to Spartans, many were accepted to have male children so that they could grow up and become citizen-warriors, and replace those who died in battle. In Sparta marriage was only for the purpose of having and bearing children and not as an answer for pleasure or emotional needs. Men would get married as soon as possible those who delayed were publically shamed, while those who had multiple sons could be rewarded. After the wedding Spartan women would their hair short since before the wedding they would shave their heads.. Mothers took care of their sons until age seven and then society took over. Father's played little or completely no role in childcare.
Comparing my finding to what I knew when I started the research i found that my knowledge has grown.
I was able to conclude that the Spartan women had more freedom and more active lives, which helped improve their appearance as well as strength. This also improved their ability to have babies and bear child labor. Although, the women were able to take responsibility for almost everything beside the army when their husbands were away but when the husbands return the women no longer could take charge .Spartan girls were given better education in order to train them to be beneficial members of society.Spartan females participated in sporting events alongside males, in full view of the public.Spartan mothers would act as the head of the household while their husbands and sons were away in the military.Spartan women were allowed to have and maintain their own property. The women married at an older age, at around 18 years old and above. I think that the Spartan civilization was a step ahead in compared to how other women in the ancient world were
treated.
How I Grown as a Researcher I think that I have improved in finding more accurate information and verify my sources. I payed more attention to the who the author or sponsor of the page is. I look for any obvious reasons for bias ,the purpose of the page and how well organized the page is. I check multiple websites and sources to make sure that the information wasn't made up.Next time i think that i could expand the sources that i used by using more books.
