During our class discussion about speaking and writing, we as a group had the question 'Which came first, speech or writing - and which is most important?' We as a group was undecided on which was most important. So we thought why speech is important and the main reasons were, the use of speech is used more frequently as it is easier to convey a message across to the other person as sometimes we can misunderstand what others mean.Furthermore, we can also interpret meaning easier due to prosody.Prosody is useful in speech as it allows us to express the tone of our voices to describe how we are feeling, by setting that tone and pitch other people can identify if you are speaking with excitement or anger. The reason why writing is important as well is because the majority of exams are through written communication and it allows examiners to review your work more accurately, where as if you communicate your exam verbally it will sometimes be hard to review what you have heard based on how much you have remembered from that person. Secondly, writing is used in everyday technology and the majority of the public are always on their mobile phones or laptops typing messages to other people. Finally, anyone who knows basic English can understand formal written language, which makes it easier for other people to read and acknowledge the information. When we discussed whether speech or writing came first, we again was undecided as now we learn to speak before we write. On the other hand, there is no evidence to prove that which one came first.
However, there are some other points my class mates shared why writing or speech has changed or what has influenced us to speak or write that way. For example, accents are a genetic part of our speech as we have inherited it from our parents or from where we have been growning up and sometimes people stereotype people's accents i.e. All 'Scousers' are thieves and unintelligent and people who have 'posh' accents
