skill is a powerful weapon for communication because language is the light of the mind to show what you wanted to express to other people. Good communication is the foundation of successful relationships, both personally and professionally. Without a good language skill and knowledge we couldn’t express what we wanted to say or understand what other people say in order to understand them and have a close relationship. In the article “Aria” written by Richard Rodriguez, Rodriguez mentions that after he spoke English as his primary language, he been talking less with his parents. His family became more and more silent because of his parents’ misunderstandings of English. His parents spoke only limited English and had a hard time communicating with their children in English, so that’s why his past intimacy life began to disappear. Communication is the basic tool of all human interaction in order to have a close relationship with each other. Communication is a powerful tool, weapon, a manipulative agent, a distinctive attribute and as recognizable for each individual as is appearance. Language is knowledge, and in our world today knowledge is one of the key factors in competitiveness. The knowledge of the languages is one of the most important tools. Overall, languages are a tool of communication between countries, cultural groups, communities and friends to express some things. Language skill and knowledge are indispensable one for today to help people get into the society. Without good language skill and knowledge people have difficulties to fit into the society. Such as Rodriguez who doesn’t speak English very well so he afraid to answer question and interacted with other people in class and he have difficult time to hear and speak public language in public world. In the article “Aria” Rodriguez changed from a socially disadvantaged child to a fluent speaker after he felt confident to speak English language in public. Rodriguez was an immigrant who spoke Spanish at home, so that’s why he misunderstood public language and spoke English so poorly that he didn’t know how to use English to express his thought. He didn’t even know the name of the neighbors that live next to him. With only knowing fifty English words, Rodriguez becomes a problem student in class. Rodriguez’s improper knowledge of English made him stand out as the kid that was behind. Every time when the teachers asked Rodriguez questions, he always mumbled and felt afraid and shy to say out loud in the class, so they went to his house for a visit. After his parents encouraged him and pushed him to spoke English. One day, Rodriguez raised his hand to volunteer to answer the question. He began to fit into society, and he listened to the English not only just sounds but words, because before he hardly understood any. Now, he gradually picked up new vocabulary and became a bold boy who had courage to volunteer to speak up in the classroom. Rodriguez became an American after he spoke to the public, and he felt happy to be a part of the public society. With the start of the public life, Rodriguez began to have interaction with his classmates, and he was very happy that people were calling his English name Rich-heard Road-ree-guess, which represented his public success in society. He no longer thought that he was a problem student in his class and he was very happy with his public success by taking chances to speak out loud in the classroom. Language is a powerful tool, it shapes our perceptions of the world around us and how others view us as individuals.
For example, in the essay “Mother Tongue” written by Amy Tan, point out that her mother didn’t speak perfect English, so people treat her differently. People in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her. When you don’t speak perfect English language people look down on you and treat you differently and unfairly. It's true how some people take advantage of her just because her English isn't perfect. Not knowing other’s language also can let people experience discrimination. I remember the first time that I experienced discrimination in American is on my first day of school. A few black students were sitting next to me and one black girl asked me to borrow lotion. At that time I didn’t know what’s that mean, so I asked her a stupid question: “what’s lotion mean?” After I asked this question they all laughed at me and some began to yell even. My face was flushed and swollen with embarrassment. Overall, language is a base thing for people to communicate and a good way to get
respect.
Language affects us in many different ways, such as communication, self-confident and respect, which how other people view you. One of the advantages about language is that it leads to the development of respect. The two articles “Mother’s Tongue” and “Aria” are very meaningful and very universal, in my opinion, because they are not just talking about the relationship with parents, with the cultural background and heritage, but also the language itself. Learning the local language will help you to communicate and integrate with the local community. Even if many of the locals speak your language, it's still worth your while learning the local language, because communications are bringing the world ever closer together.
