The No Child Left Behind act has its pros and cons when it comes to the five core principles including strong accountability, expanded flexibility and control, methods based on scientific research, expanded options for parents, and highly qualified teachers. The pros and cons of the say this because when teaching diverse learners they are dealing with a variety of different learning styles. In turn every student will not respond to the No Child Left Behind principles or methods in the same manner, meaning that it may work for some while it may not work for others. The idea of strong accountability it is relevant to the teachers and the students. The teachers they are held accountable due to the set standards and curriculums that they have to teach and follow in order to meet the goals of the NCLB. Along with this they have to prepare the student for the standardized tests that are put in place to measure the students and the teacher’s progress. This is tricky because if the student fails teachers are held accountable while the students are also held responsible for themselves if they fail. This is when highly qualified teachers cone into effect due to the evaluations of their teaching through how the students perform on the standardized tests. In some ways this may be a good thing, but it can also be really bad too. If the students do good then the teachers look highly qualified but if the students don’t do a good job then the teachers look unqualified or as if they are not meeting the standards when that really may not be the case at all. Although teachers have certain curriculums to follow, they do have expanded flexibility and control regarding tailoring their lesson plans which is a good thing that gives them a little freedom. Information processing has two areas: innate ability and acquired knowledge (Bee & Boyd, 2010). A lower IQ can compensate for acquired knowledge. People with higher IQ’s will perform better than a person with a lower IQ. This also applies to student learning. Children with a lower IQ need effective strategies for processing information. The student and parent were asked a series of questions about her experience at school and her current living and social situation. I will identify the student in my summary as “Cecelia” and the parent as the mother of the students. Cecelia suffers from partial hearing loss and several limited social skills. Cecelia’s mother stated that her placement in the program was determined by an IQ test that she received as a child. Cecelia was asked how she enjoyed her placement in the special education program in high school. She stated that the teachers and students were very nice. During my first round of practicum, I went to a kindergarten classroom with around 20 to 25 students in the classroom. I went to Miller Elementary and Mrs. Schuchard was my cooperative teacher. I walked in and was immediately placed with students to work with. In the morning the students were working on their daily five and phonics. One thing that I observed that I found very interesting is that the teacher had two rug areas for meetings. When she needed to teach the children for a longer period of time, she would tell them to move over to the other area in order to make them have a brain break and then refocus. After the observation I felt the stress the Occupational Therapist was feeling. I was able to see she was not able to do more class room activities with the student who had a behavioral and physical problem, but I saw she was able to calm the student down before the student became even more agitated and aggressive toward others. I believe the OT accomplished not to have the student's behavior escalate more than what they could have been. On a cold December afternoon, a shy 10 year old waited with her family in a quaint restaurant. She sat nervously wondering if she could play in front of all these people. What if she made a terrible mistake? What if she cried? What if she couldn’t perform? These are the questions that consumed her mind. With encouragement from her mother, the girl hesitantly approached the electric piano. Opening to the page of her first song, she placed her fingers and began her elementary Christmas song. She submerged herself in the music she created. When the song ended, the patrons responded in applause and looked on in wonder at this girl’s talent and ease. Once again, I was placed in Mrs.Metcalfe who teaches second grade at Bens Branch Elementary. Mrs.Metcalfe took attendance while the students waited patiently on the carpet. After she took attendance, she addressed that she had taken some privileges away from the students because the students did not picked up their mess after having centers and would not follow instructions that the teacher gave. She explained that centers might return for the upcoming school year if they behaved properly. After she addressed the issues of the students, she instructed everyone to go back to their desks and waited till they put their thumbs which meant that they were ready for the lesson of the day.
