Special K Protein Powder Lab Report
INTRODUCTION
These polymers composed of amino acid monomers called proteins are important to our body. Protein is important because it composes parts of our body and assists in bodily functions. A type of protein named keratin makes up our hair and nails. Protein is used in your body to repair and build tissue, and it is a necessity in making hormones, enzymes, and other chemicals in the body. Many people use protein substances and supplements in correlation with weight lifting and working out to strengthen muscles with the protein characteristics of repairing and building tissue. Each of these substances is made with a particular protein concentration depending on the intention of the product. Each product will propose a result and broadcast the protein concentration on the product, but with the fad of fitness lately especially in younger generations are the products being true to saying what the protein concentration really is and is it important for muscle gain? Studies done suggest that protein following weight lifting will help in weight gain. (D. W. West, N. A. Burd, V. G. Coffey, S. K. Baker, L. M. Burke, J. A. Hawley, D. R. Moore, T. Stellingwerff, S. M. Phillips. 2011) In this lab we tested the protein concentration of a Special K protein powder. I hypothesize that this product will have higher concentration of protein than the other solutions due to the other solutions being basic solutes, I also hypothesize products are true to what they say and that protein concentration is important to know if you are putting that substance in your body. I also hypothesize protein consumption

Proteins Biuret Test Results. Figure 1 is showing both graphs of results from the spectrophotometer. Figure 1A is the results without the unknown plotted. By using the best fit line and equation the unknown substance was found to have .75 absorbance and 11.5 mg/mL protein concentration. Figure 1B shows the newly found data of the unknown plotted with X.

Proteins are a part of every cell, tissue, and organ in our bodies. The protein we eat is broken down by amino acids that are later used to replace proteins in our bodies. These proteins include meats, poultry, fish, eggs, nuts, seeds, milk and milk products.…

In our study we had four testing reagents (Lugol’s which tests for starch, Biuret tests for protien, Benedict’s that tests for reducing sugars, and Ninhydrin which detects amino acids) and four stock solutions at various concentrations (protein in the form of albumin, glucose for the sugars, amino acid through glycine and just basic starch). We tested each of these with our three unknowns (which were the three separate protein supplements). Mixing each individual supplements with all of our reagents and stock solutions, we tried to obtain a positive or negative reaction to decipher if the supplement was indeed protein positive. We also tested each supplement with a constant volume of H2O to have a standardized measurement to compare our data back to. In every mixture there was 5 ml of (stock solution/the three unknowns/our constant) separately mixed with 1 ml of each testing reagents.…

Proteins are key components in a diet because all the cells and all the tissues in the body contain protein. Protein is there to help people’s growth and repairs the body from damage. Proteins are made up of amino acids. Meat, poultry, milk and fish contain protein and all the essential amino acids. Proteins can be from plant sources such as rice, wheat, corn and beans these proteins do not contain all the amino acids needed. If you do not get enough protein in your diet then you might not grow properly and your body will not be able to repair itself when you are ill or if you get injured.…

Protein: Like fats and carbohydrates, proteins are complex compounds made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen but they also include nitrogen as part of their main composition. Proteins give structure to the cells of the body and are important for cell growth, repair and maintenance. They are in every type of tissue in the body including bones, skin, muscle and organs. Good sources of protein include meat, fish, eggs, dairy products, pulses, grains, nuts and seeds. It is recommended men have around 56g per day and women 46g. The author does an excellent job regarding how supplements are pointless and a waste of money. In my opinion, I do agree to an extent, but I have seen from many different reports how protein powder can increase your gains in the weight room. Mike Tanier argues how protein powder turns into “expensive urine”. I would have to disagree from that statement due to my own experiences with protein powder.…
