As a senator of the United States, I feel it is my duty to help keep the country in a neutral state in order to stop the risk of getting into problems. At a time like this, we cannot run the risk of ruining our economy and getting involved in a national conflict. There are many points in Wilson’s war message that I would like to point out as unreasonable. Throughout the message he makes sure that he talks a lot about democracy, other nation’s choices, and future plans for the United States.
Wilson states that, “The world must be made safe for democracy.” I believe it is irrational to try to change another nation’s government, especially now in the midst of the start of a war. You cannot expect a nation’s government to change so quickly; this would take a lot of time, and would nonetheless cause many problems. We may advocate democracy and try to influence others to enforce this type of government, but going to war with another nation for this is definitely not the answer to this problem. I would also like to question this part of his speech; what is the actual intention of sending the United States into war? Is he using democracy as an excuse, or is this just a response to his wounded pride pertaining to when Zimmerman made the offer to Mexico? All Wilson wants is to keep his territory, which is part of the reason why he is sending us to war; and, although he wants to spread democracy, it does not mean that any time is the right time. There is a time and place to dispute nations’ governments, but it is not worth going to war for.
Wilson also says that, “We are accepting this challenge of hostile purpose because we know that in such a government, following such methods, we can never have a friend.” Just because you don’t agree with what a nation is doing, it does not mean that you have to go to war with them. It is not our business to get involved in foreign affairs, particularly when we know that a potential war could tamper with
