Speed Dating Tips and Questions

Successful speed dating requires a little preparation and care given to the questions that you intend to ask.

THINGS TO AVOID

Do not drink before or during the event. Overdrinking is a turn-off for most people, and using it at a speed-dating event risks making the evening into an embarrassing situation. Do not attend a speed-dating event held at a place where you spend considerable time. Seeing friends at the event but not participating is a stressful experience and it will show in your mannerisms. Avoid negative or mundane details about your life, especially personal frustrations. You tend to discuss these things in too much detail, which leads to monopolizing the conversation and showing a frustrating self-interest.

Presentation is everything, and successful speed dating relies on your ability to present yourself in a very short amount of time. Be deliberate in your choice of apparel. Wearing an abundance of expensive jewelry tells him that you may be an expensive date. Jewelry that is subtle tells him that you are traditional and conservative. Select your accessories and clothing to provide an insight into your personality. This makes you more appealing to those who share similar tastes, while providing an image of yourself that makes you more memorable. Show up on time for the event and make sure that you bring a nice pen.

QUESTIONS TO ASK

Prepare a list of questions ahead of time. Consider the four primary categories of questions to ask during your speed date and make sure that you have a ready list so you can diversify your questioning and make the evening more fun for you. The first category is your ice-breaker questions. The goal of these is to relax both of you by engaging in a thought that is different from your surroundings.

Try asking him what his favorite pickup line is or for the worst pickup lines that anyone has ever used on him. You ask information-gathering questions to learn about your date and include questions about their job or favorite foods. Questions about hobbies and interests help you learn about the things that they enjoy. Fun questions let you get some insight into their personality. Make long lists for each of these and commit them to

While reading Gladwell’s elaboration on the various methods of slicing, several historical business decisions come to mind. Gladwell’s review of speed dating offers many similarities to my experiences interviewing candidates to fill vacant positions on various teams I have managed. My process for interviewing candidates is a multistep process, where my first interview is normally no more than 30 minutes, containing about 15-20 minutes of my explaining the position being filled and the needs of the company. Gladwell specifically identified the purpose was not to determine if both speed dating parties want to establish a relationship together. The purpose was to decide if each person has enough interest in the other, to at least learn more about him/her. In the 10 minutes where I directly interview candidates for skills and competencies, I am simply deciding if I want to bring this person in to learn more detail about their skills and competencies.…

I recently was given the following questions by a friend of mine and challenged to try them out, on someone other than him. I have to say I am curious about how this would go but I am not sure if it is something I would actually do. The thought of letting a stranger know so much about me so quickly would be something so far outside of my comfort zone. Supposedly these are questions that someone came up with after many failed dates. These questions were reportedly the reason she fell in love and got married. I wish I knew the name of the individual responsible for these questions but I do not.…
