There are many interesting things to learn about the Sphinx of Egypt. There are three questions in particular I wanted to research about. My three questions are what happened to the Sphinx's nose? did the Sphinx have names other than the Sphinx? and what are some legends or story about the Sphinx?
What I found about what happened to the Sphinx's nose is that there is not a definite answer to the destruction of the nose. There are many theories to what happened to it. Some of the theories are that erosion destroyed it, Napoleon and his troops shot it off, British troops shot it off, and German troops shot it off (home.xnet.com). So, I explored the most popular theory of the destruction of the nose. The most popular …show more content…
The Sphinx actually has names from different cultures, different time periods, and different religions. Some of the other names include Abū al-Hol (Father of Terror) is what the Arabs called it (www.ancient.eu). In the 4th century AD it was called Bel-hit (The Guardian) by Christians. The name Bel-hit is still used today by the Egyptians. Egyptians today only refer to the statue as the Sphinx when discussing it with tourist (www.ancient.eu). The Egyptians of the New Kingdom of Egypt called it Horemakhet (Horus of the Horizon) (www.ancient.eu). The name Sphinx actually comes from Greek mythology. The myth it comes from is about a mythical creature with a head of a human and a body of a lion and the name Sphinx means to “strangle” because the Greek Sphinx would strangle anybody who answered her riddle incorrectly (www.ancientegyptonline.co.uk). What are some of the legends and stories about the Great Sphinx of Egypt? There are a couple legends and stories that people believe in. One legend that people believe is that there are hidden rooms and passageways that run underneath the Sphinx (www.ancientegypt.co.uk). In 2014 a secret tunnel was discovered underneath a front paw of the sphinx …show more content…
The story says that a young prince fell asleep next to the sphinx one day after hunting. While the prince was a asleep he dreamt that the Great Sphinx made him a promise. The promise that the prince would become the ruler of Upper and Lower Egypt if he cleared all of the sand that was covering its body. At this point in time the sphinx was covered up to its neck with sand. The rest of the story is missing. It is unknown to where the rest of the story is or if it just wasn’t written at all. The stele was put up around the time of the pharaoh Thutmosis IV. He lived around the time of 1400 B.C. (www.ancientegypt.co.uk). So people believe that Thutmosis IV was the prince that fell asleep between the paw. More reasons that leads to belief that Thutmosis IV to being the prince is that he cleared the sand around the Sphinx and became pharaoh of all of Egypt (www.guardians.net)
I had a lot of fun researching about the Great Sphinx of Egypt. After learning so much about the sphinx, it makes me want to go and see it in person. Along with other monuments in
