Spolsky Why Your Brain Hates Other People Summary
As I read through Spolsky's article “Why your brain hates other people” and Chapter 1 of our book I was able to connect with some of the things that they talked about. Our main topic was about diversity and Inclusion and how it leads to success. My parents are from Mexico and came to the U.S for the opportunity of a better life. And as a result of them coming here I was conceived and have a chance of creating a better life for myself. Trying to relate to one culture is hard for me because I can’t say I’m full on Hispanic or American. I also can’t really say I’m more of one than the other because they are both equally important to me. Throughout my life I’ve missed out on certain traditions and cultural experiences from both ends. My parents have tried to teach me about what the hispanic culture and I’ve slowly learned about …show more content…
And I was surprised on how different cultures can really be. It was interesting to see how close everyone is over there and how different our lifestyle are. At times, I felt so out of place that when I tried to introduce myself to others; I’d be looked down upon. I was told that I had it easy in U.S and how terrible I was for not not knowing a lot about the Hispanic culture. People would whisper, “she came to Mexico just to brag about her life.” I was only 17 years old at the time and didn’t really know how to react to all the negative feedback. I remember running to my sister with tears in my eyes, asking her why it is that people judge us based upon what they think they know? I was glad I got to travel to Mexico and see a whole new world of what could've been my life. And I guess part of the hate that I got was because I really don’t know what it’s like to live in their shoes, but I also feel like they also need to understand that they don’t what I’ve been through. I will say that thanks to this experience I’ve really learned to value what I

When I saw the cover of this movie I thought that I would not like it at all because it looked like an old movie and I really don't like the black and white style. Watching it surprised me a lot. I was very moved and touched by the actual characters and the moral of the story. Knowing that this was not a fictional movie made it that much harder to not get emotional. There where many issues addressed in this movie with the Mexican-American mine workers.…

Culture is What Matters Richard Rodriguez’s essay “Blaxicans and Other Reinvented Americans,” reveals race should not matter on how you identify yourself but instead it is culture what matters. Throughout, the essay Rodriguez highlights how when people were coming into neighborhoods “They were being welcomed within a new community for reasons of culture”(90). This suggest how it did not matter which race they were. Race does not matter because people might identify themselves as the culture they believe in. Not everyone is going to chose the race they belong too but instead choose what they believe they belong in.…

It started with dancing. At an international festival held in my city I was invited to by my aunt to watch her daughter dance with her traditional Mexican dance group. As I sat in the huge audience that had came out to see them I realized how stupid I was. the vibrancy of the colors on the girls traditional dresses and the rhythm to which they moved combined with their infectious energy I was mesmerized. I walked away feeling proud, proud because that is part of me. Now I know that sounds beauty but self-acceptance doesn’t happen overnight. But through the help of the #Black Lives Matter movement and my new love for al pastor tacos I’ve come to see myself as a proud Latina. To know that he was capable of moving and getting through all the setbacks that arise makes me feel like I’m capable of enduring any challenges in life. For someone with the health that he already have last 25 days without food really shows what someone is capable of doing when there mind is set on the goal. The film overall taught me a lot about the Mexican culture and the things that they went through throughout their history in California. I now have a different perspective on farm workers and what it takes to be able survive such horrific circumstances. The presentation made me feel as if I don’t know as much as I should know about history for every race and class throughout our history. This occurred not that long ago and is still an issue in the United States today. We see numerous people working for starvation wages that cannot improve the circumstance that their almost stuck in. On my father’s side, I was also different. I listened to Spanish music and wasn’t a die hard rock and roll fan. I preferred foods with more spices as opposed to plain salted soup and salad. I spoke about my experiences with the mexican side of my family and got an awkward eye. My uncle, who I have known forever, who has come to birthdays and christmas with my family is a flaming racist towards Mexicans. He uses hate language, and accuses them of crimes, knowing all the while that his nephews are half Mexican. My own grandmother wouldn’t talk to me for 8 years because I was a biracial baby, because she thought I was “Dirty”. I was different, I was accepted as a cousin, a nephew, eventually even a grandson, but I never wanted to choose this side over my other. I couldn’t choose one side of myself over the…

Once we arrived to Illinois we went by 26st. There my father was waiting for us outside with my cousins and aunt. The first thing I did was reach for my father. Our first few weeks in Chicago were a bit lunatic. By saying that the next day after we arrived my sister and I went to the store and a shoot broke out. My mom came into the store running to pick us up. I honestly was scared of my new home. Once school started I started to have a bit of comfort in the neighborhood. Once I went to school it hit me that I was not anymore in Mexico, for I saw a lot of diversity. From black to white, to brown people I saw and I meet. I only saw white people on TV who were another ethic than me. During kinder I learned to read, count, and learn a new language…

I’ve been raised Peruvian, as a child every day I’d hear our music playing in the house, we’d eat our food, and if the tv was on we’d watch our channel. But for eight hours a day, five days a week I’d have to leave my culture, not by plane but by bus, not hours away but only a few minutes. School was where I learned about the world, different people from different cultures all from places I had heard about, and though I appreciated the new cultures I was being exposed to, I was always embarrassed when nobody knew mine. Its wasn’t until middle school that I could say I was Peruvian without requiring some sort of explanation afterwards. My classmates were under the impression that there were four races: white, black, asian, and mexican. Even today I hear Mexican in the place of Cuban, Venezuelan, or any other latin country. If someone wants to get on my nerves the mexican stereotypes are the first to come out.…

Back home I was used to water parks and a million other things to do. In the beginning, I found nothing amusing about New Mexico. I guess this is where my isolation began; New Mexico was so different from my hometown that everything just reminded me of how much I missed California. I ended up staying indoors all the time. The biggest impact that New Mexico had over my person was not the land but the cultural shock that I encountered. I come from a Mexican background and have been speaking Spanish since I was in diapers. I was proud of what I thought I knew about my culture, but the first few months in New Mexico taught me that I couldn't be more wrong and different from the real Hispanic population. I thought I spoke Spanish but upon hearing almost everyone around me speak it, I thought so myself, I’m in trouble. The Hispanic population is overwhelming in New Mexico, and in the beginning I felt very isolated even though we shared a common language. Everything literally spiraled downward from this point. If my family and I couldn't even be comfortable with our own people how were we suppose to mix ourselves with a whole new community? Little did I know that moving to New Mexico was actually going to strengthen my Hispanic culture because I ended up celebrating a very important tradition in the Mexican culture; my quinceanera. A quinceanera is celebrated…

As someone who is biracial, I feel being Hispanic has been a unique experience for me because I am always discovering my Hispanic identity. For a long time, I felt disconnected from that part of me because I grew up in a predominately white town away from my family. In fact, I only discovered this part of my identity this February when I attended a camp called Building Bridges that is centered on race. There I was paired with other biracial people who felt the same and the discussions regarding identity made me realize what being Hispanic means to me. Now I realize being Hispanic is more than being bilingual and the color of my skin. It is about being part of a hard working community that has incredibly rich history and culture.…
