Lisa is the assistant director at Family First, a community development agency that supports families. They deliver a range of projects including welfare advice, education and day care services for mental-health service users. The organisation prides itself on being grass roots and keeping local people at the heart of the organisation.
Lisa is responsible for 4 project coordinators and 2 administrative staff. The organisation is currently going through a period of uncertainty; there may be funding cuts from the local authority. If these cuts happen, Lisa will either need to reduce staffing costs or find additional sources of income in the next twelve months. Some of the staff have responded badly, they are demotivated and are showing less interest in their work. The number of local people using the services is reducing; consequently targets are not being met.
There have been informal conversations amongst the project coordinators about who may be at risk of redundancy. One possibility is that the coordinators out their own administration, which would increase their workload. Another possibility is that at least two of the coordinators become self- funding and find alternative ways of finding the income to cover their costs. A third possibility is that the administrators are given more responsibility and contribute to the project work.
