When a recording artist is in the process of writing a song their goal is to tell a story that can relate to people’s lives, most of the time. In The Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caufield is struggling to find his place in the world and feels lousy and ‘depressed’ a lot. Many people in today’s modern day society have similar struggles as Holden, like feeling isolated and alone in the world. In the song ‘Mad World’ by Gary Jules, he speaks about being in the same place with the same worm out people and wanting to die.

In the song, Gary sings “all around me are familiar faces; worn out places, worn out faces.” This line can relate to Holden because Holden knew many people in his home town, New York, although he was not necessarily friends with them. For example, when Holden goes to Ernie’s bar he sees his brother’s friend (familiar face,) Lillian. Holden greets her kindly and speaks to her as if they’re friends but in reality he thinks she is a phony and states, “And I didn't like her much. Nobody did. You had to feel sort of sorry for her, in a way.” Mad World also relates to Holden because in the song, “And I find it kinda funny, I find it kinda sad, the dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had.” Holden states numerous times throughout the novel that he feels ‘depressed and lousy’ ad he once said “depressed and all. I almost wished I was dead.”

Traumatic experiences like the death of his brother Allie has not allowed him to move on.“ I know he’s dead….just because somebody is dead you don’t stop liking them..”(171). This shows that Holden has not been able to move on with his life because Allie is still a main focus of his life even though he is not physically there. Holden does not want anything to change, he wants everything to stay the same. That is one of the reasons he likes the Museum of Natural History, because it will always remain the same, it represents stability and security to him.“…every time I’d get to the end of the block I’d make believe I was talking to my brother Allie I’d say to him ‘Allie don’t let me disappears’…when I’d reach the other side of the street without disappearing, I’d thank him”(198). Holden suffers from extreme loneliness, however he does not anyone to get close to him, I believe that, yes , Holden has a problem, but it can be cured by giving Holden support, so he can build confidence within himself, so that one day he can be ready to open up to…

There were recurring patterns Holden unconsciously fell into that contributed to his depression and then there were events that halted these depressions. The events that contributed to his depression were that he judged people, he judged himself and he did not take care of himself. Of course there were events that halted the depression such as the act of love shown by his sister Phoebe. Love is perceived as forgiveness, peace, living in the moment and happiness. His sister is the only person in the book who shows these characteristics. As for Holden he never doesn’t experience love at all, he is always depressed and is never really happy in the book. Except when he is with his sister, he feels happy and is in the moment.…

The strongest proof of this is when Holden himself admits that he is depressed. Also, in one part of the story, Holden was crazy for girl company, but hearing that she went to the movies, de didn’t feel that way anymore. Additionally, he told Sally that they should run away together and live a new life, showing that he is dissatisfied with society and wishes for a better place. Holden also thinks about moving west where he can become a “deaf-mute,” indicating that he wants to be isolated from society. Furthermore, he also finds the mummies, which in a way, are deaf-mute, comforting. This all shows the depression within Holden.…

    Catcher: Tears and Holden

    1. Holden breaks into tears after his confrontation with Sunny and Maurice in chapter 14. Another time when Holden is crying is when he leaves Pencey. In chapter 7 pages 52 Holden says “I was sort of crying. I don’t know why”. The only real connection I can make about the two evens in which Holden cries is the loss of something. In this case, it was not his loss, it was Phoebe’s. Phoebe gave him the Christmas money that she was saving. Holden saw it as generosity, but I think at the same time he saw it has Phoebe losing something which makes him sad. The second example (when he leaves Pencey) once again displays loss. In this situation Holden is losing a school, he’s losing a place to call “home” (despite his hatred for the school). The whole idea of losing something and loss can be connected back to the overall theme of the story.…

Holden is upset because he is such an underachiever. The past few days have been very tough on Holden, he was even beaten up by a pimp after refusing to give a stripper extra five bucks. “Only, this time I thought I was dying,” (103) Holden says after he is mugged by the pimp, Maurice. That experience is one of the most adult things he’s ever dealt with, or anyone can deal with for that matter. Anyone who would have to go through that must have some way to forget about it, and for a few moments Holden can focus on the fantasy in order to clear his head from that scenario. Although Holden is a terribly miserable character, he also hates change. He is seldom remotely happy throughout his journey, but one of the few times is when he is in Museum of Natural History. He goes to the mummy exhibit and it is just as he remembered it, he even describes it as “nice and peaceful.” (205) This is one of the only moments in the novel where Holden is calm. He explains what the problem is with the world, “You may think there is a place that is nice and peaceful, but when you’re not looking somebody’ll sneak up and write ‘Fuck You’ right under your nose.” (204) It seems here as if Holden is finding a way to upset himself. He is at peace for just a brief moment, but then once he starts to actually think, he ruins it, which is what he does with the fantasy. When he is lost and it seems like he is…

The song “All I Want” by Kodaline refers to Holden’s feelings toward Phoebe near the end of the book. For example, when Holden is delusional, he thinks he is going to die of pneumonia and says, “...so finally what I figured I’d do, I figured I’d better sneak home and see her, in case I died and all” (Salinger 156). Holden’s one wish before he dies (or so he thinks) was to go see his kid sister Phoebe. Holden has a very close relationship with his sister, and they are both very fond of the other. This mindset is displayed by the members of Kodaline when they sing “‘cause if I could see your face once more/ I could die a happy man I’m sure” (Kodaline). While “All I Want” is admittedly about a romantic relationship and not one of a sibling nature,…

He also details that the events occurring last winter were what inspired him to reach out for help. By doing this, Holden is contrasting the vast majority of the actions he makes throughout his madman experience. One of his main grievances with the people around him are that they are, as he frequently claims, “phony.” To Holden, just about everybody can be called a phony, particularly those his age and above. Of the many people he has opportunities to form relationships with, Holden only appears to care about two people: his deceased brother Allie and his younger sister Phoebe, both of whom are prepubescent children. These relationships exist to emphasize Holden’s lack of ability to let go of the past and develop as a person over the course of the book. He has an unhealthy admiration of their childlike innocence, which prompts him to act as immaturely as possible. Subsequently, he tries to show his maturity by making exceptionally poor choices such as getting drunk and hiring a prostitute. Whenever his actions have consequences, he blames the “phony” world around him instead of himself, which motivates him to alienate himself from others. Salinger’s main goal in characterizing Holden is to show how…

Much of Holden’s separation from society is due to his standing between childhood and adulthood. Holden does not have the maturity to become an adult, and expresses his many weaknesses by talking about how “phony” or “ignorant” people are. “It's full of phonies, and all you do is study so that you can learn enough to be smart enough to be able to buy a goddam Cadillac some day, and you have to keep making believe you give a damn if the football team loses, and all you do is talk about girls and liquor and sex all day, and everybody sticks together in these dirty little goddam cliques” (Salinger 131). Holden expresses his desire for being different from others and does not want to live by societies norms. Much of Holden’s confusion and lack of desire to be involved with other individuals is caused from the pain and disappointment received by it. Holden finds himself being lonely for much of the novel, and whenever he finds a companion, he will lead him/her on resulting in pushing a possible new friend away. Due to Holden’s lack of friends and involvement with other groups, he does not participate in common events that other kids his age would. “I remember around three o’clock that afternoon I was standing way the hell up on top of Thomsen Hill…You could see the whole field from there” (Salinger 2). Caulfield lives his life as a “spectator” standing far away from the events that are happening, just watching the…

Holden’s troubles become primarily evident through his apparent loneliness. Although while reading, the audience may be emotionally swayed by sympathy for Holden due to his clear lack of social skills and friends, readers can eventually develop a sense that Holden actually excludes himself in a way. The story begins with Holden not attending the football game, but rather, standing alone watching from afar. In a sense, he seems to almost enjoy being excluded “The whole team ostracized me [...] It was pretty funny in a way.”…

Haiku is a popular form of poem in Japan. It is an unrhymed writing and because the content is very brief, usually only three lines for a complete poem, it is necessarily imagistic to create a vivid picture of the nature and seasons. Matsuo Basho, a famous haiku poet in Japan, mastered this form of poem and the poem “Four Haiku” is one of his writing. In this poem, we can easily see the change of life, from the beginning to the end, through many images of nature which symbolize the circle of life of a person.…
