The code is: one: the will must consent, two: The act must be freely done, and three: The intellect must be fully aware of the sinful nature of the act (Uthoff 13). If you read the code you will see it make a lot of sense, the first condition is telling us that when we sin we are desperate to see who is consenting us of the sin. The second one is saying how we are able to sin freely, God gives us freedom but we abuse it, the third condition is saying that the person that is sinning is fully aware but still goes on with the sin. This code was carved on a monumental stone for all to see. In doing this, the entire population would be able to know for sure what is expected of them and what the punishments would be if these codes were broken. We also see this same concept stated in the Jewish Torah which came into being about 700 years later then the code of Hammurabi. From the book of Exodus, chapter 21 line 23, “But if any harm follow, thou shalt give life for life, Eye for Eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.” (mechon-mamre) This excerpt is stating the same concept almost identical to that of Babylon’s Hammurabi. It is also placed in full public view because of the fact that it is the key point of the Jewish lifestyle. When comparing these two texts it would seem that the Jewish Torah has built from the Hammurabi’s code and elaborated it into parts of their religious teachings and their way of…

When we consider the land as the parish, the farm as the church and the farmer as the pastor it becomes clear which leader is which. Athey Keith is the ideal missional leader. He lives with and attends to the parish, carefully listening to and responding to the needs of the land. Athey is more about the process, the how of ministry, and being faithful to that than to a desired outcome. Therefore, he works with patience as he develops the church, his farm, out of response to the land. The farm is faithful to the process and respect the land and honors the land. In the same way the missional leader and by extension the missional church seek to be faithful to the Bible, the source of life for Christians, and out of that faithfulness respond to the needs of the…

The author relates his point this way, “…our sin consists in our allowing our character to be formed by the story that we must do everything (pride) or nothing (sloth) (Hauerwas 48).” As free moral agents, the choice to act in sin or not remains with each individual. Sin is an inevitable part of this thing called life. The Apostle set the record straight in Romans 3:23 (KJV) when he said, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God (Bible Hub).” There are things that that should not be done that are, and things that should be done that go undone. Paul further addressed this in Romans 7:19-25, because there is a constant battle within between good and evil. This ethical crossroad exists for all, and it is only navigated properly through the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit, God’s agent. The Holy Spirit helps provide Christians with God’s power for living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is right. Praise be to God for His precious…
