John’s early life is mostly unknown. We know that he was born around A.D. 3 to Zebedee and Salome. John is only mentioned a few times after Pentecost and traveled the least of the apostles. This is most likely because he had to remain in Jerusalem to take care of Mary, as well as his parents. However, according to St. Paul, John was one of the main “pillars” of the Church, along with James and Peter. John stayed in Jerusalem until most likely sometime in the A.D. 60s when the martyrdom of his brother, James, took place. He went to Rome and met Peter, whom he had not met in a long time. Unfortunately, he almost died there, when he was thrown into a vat of hot oil, but miraculously was unharmed. At some point, John was imprisoned and forced to work in the mines but was eventually freed after Nerva became Rome’s new emperor. John then went to Ephesus, an ancient city in modern day Turkey, where he assumed the responsibility of all the Churches of Asia after St. Paul died around A.D. 66 or 67.
