Saint Barbara is someone who I continuously look up to whom practiced the Christian faith. She has always been considered my family’s favorite saint. Her story inspires me to be a better person and to be true to what I believe in despite what others say. I am amazed at the amount of courage, will, and bravery she had, and I really hope I have courage like that someday. Her story gives me a vivid reminder that their can be anger in our lives but we can control this by being in touch with God’s presence and continue to look up and pray to him no matter what. Also, due to my cultural background, my family firmly believes she was a great saint and therefore we have great devotion and celebrate her feast day, December 4th, annually which we don’t do to any other saints, making me further familiar with her life and background. We…
In today’s world, a saint is a very difficult thing to come across; however I believe to have found the perfect candidate for canonization. Her name is Mary Dempster. I believe that the miracles of this woman are real, and not just coincidental, due to her unstable state of mind.…
Elizabeth Ann Seton was the first born American to be canonized in the Roman Catholic Church. Although this is not why I chose her to be my confirmation saint, she is the patroness of in-law problems, widows, and the death of parents. Elizabeth Ann Seton had to go through many losses in her lifetime including the death of her mother and sister at age three, her stepmother when her father and she got divorced, and her husband when he died of tuberculosis (Catholic Online). Elizabeth had a very good bond with her step mother and when she and her father got divorced, she abandoned Elizabeth. She wanted nothing to do with her. This made Elizabeth feel depressed and alone. She went on to marry William Magee Seton when she was 19 years old. He eventually died of tuberculosis, leaving Elizabeth a widow at age 29. She started a religious order that went on to spread throughout the country. This is what she is most known for. Then on January 4, 1821, Elizabeth Ann Seton died of tuberculosis at age 46. She was very charming, cultured, and brave. Because of all the suffering she went through, she taught many people how to pray. On September 14,…
Saint Thomas is the patron saint of students and education because of his philosophical teachings, writing, and aesthetic theories. He will always be recognized as a brave man because of his never ending love for the Dominican Order, even though it was not approved by the people around him. He did not let people put him…
The Church of the Later-day Saints was founded by Joseph Smith on April 6, 1830. Joseph was born 23 December 1805 in America. In 1820 when he was 14 years old Joseph was concerned that all churches claimed to be the true church. He prayed for guidance and saw God and Jesus in a vision. They told him not to join any existing church as the original church would be restored to the earth. Later in 1823 Joseph had another vision of an angel called Moroni who showed him religious history inscribed on golden plates. These inscriptions told the teachings of an ancient American civilisation. Joseph Smith used these inscriptions to write the ‘the Book of Mormon’. In 1830 Joseph established the ‘Church of Christ’ and after a revelation he…
The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine is simply breathtaking. From the exterior to the interior of the cathedral, you can find plentiful amounts of highly sophisticated bodies of work. Before laying a foot inside, the massive bronze doors containing forty-eight relief panels depicting scenes from the Old and New Testament catches the eyes of many. Also, many note the exquisite statues and carvings of saints and Jesus all along the Western Front of the Cathedral. Once inside, the enormous pilier-cantonnés stand along the nave aisle, where it erects up into the ceiling. Eventually, the columns meet with one another at four angles, creating a quadripartite vault in the nave ceiling. The stained glass windows that lines the entire cathedral strikes your retina at all different angles as you rotate your body. A little beyond the crossing, the high altar contains a magnificent cross, as well as an iron tomb of the man who founded the cathedral. If you focus the eyes just behind the choir, you will glare at seven stunning radial chapels—each one representing an apostle, a patron, or immigrant. But out of all the marvelous artwork within and outside the chapel, there was one particular window that caught my attention.…
I chose St. Rose Philippine Duchesne to be my confirmation name. I chose her because she inspires me to follow God, even when it’s tough, and also not to give up. Throughout her life she was dedicated and perseverant. When she was young, her mother and her mother’s sister lived together, so she was always around lots of kids. When she got into her teenage years, her dad put her in a convent to study and be more polite. At first, she did not want to go, but she eventually gave in. After the first month, she loved it, and would spend all her free time praying. Then, her dad started to get worried, because he wanted her to marry eventually. He took her back home. After a year of introducing Rose to suitors, she was miserable. One day, a missionary came to town to talk about his travels. She went to see him,…
Saint Lawrence is the patron saint of poor people because he brought all the poor and homeless people and said they were the treasure of the church. He also gave all his money and merchandise to the poor people in need of it. He would see his merchandise for money to by food for the…
Saint Patrick is one of the most well known saints in the Christian faith. He is known as the patron saint of Ireland who converted all of Ireland to Christianity, drove all the snakes out of Ireland, and used the three-leafed shamrock to symbolize the Holy Trinity. His feast day is on March 17, and it is a holiday known for its large scale celebrations in Ireland and all over other Christian countries, including the United States.…
As part of my confirmation, I will take a saints name. This saint becomes the heavenly patron that I will set as my role model. My sponsor has been my "role model" throughout this process, but as I begin my Catholic life St. Elizabeth Ann will be my guide. I chose Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton because for the past 3 years I have been part of her team for my old school St. Joseph. At St. Joseph we have this saint system. When you first enter 6th grade you are put into one of the first 5 American saints teams, and I was chosen into Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton’s, but not only that she is a great catholic that someday I hope to become.…
Now, you may be thinking to yourself, “How is this saint any different from the others who were just like her? And, what did she even do to receive such a high, notable honour?” Well, my friend, you're about to find out. Saint Agnes wasn't a typical, offhand saint; however, she was much more. She was the daughter…
I came to Holy Name in the fall of 2011 as a seventh grader and from the moment I walked through the doors, my life began to change. The people I have met, the friends I have made, and the lessons I have learned, have shaped me into the person that I am today. Because of the Sisters of Saint Anne, I am able to receive an excellent education and I’ve been given the motivation I need to apply myself in the future. The sacrifice made by Sister Marie-Anne Blondin serves as an example in my life of all the other sacrifices that have been made in my life, further motivating me to do the best I can in whatever field I choose.…
Before being confirmed, Catholics have to understand why picking a saint for Confirmation is important. Choose wisely and be open to find the right one, because the saints await one’s arrival in eternity and share in the desire for all to reach heaven (Filz 4). Since saints led holy lives and are close to God in heaven, Catholics feel that their prayers are particularly effective (Catholic Online 11). Often Catholics ask a particular saint to pray for them, because the saint would have an interest in the problem…
Saint Catherine of Siena helped the church by working on bringing the real pope back to Rome. She occupied most of her time helping the poor. She changed the sinners, and made enemies has friends by praying more than she did by her words. People who didn't believe in god or were against her beliefs were changed by just her speaking out about her religion and her prayers to god. This saint helps me with my own faith by believing in god. Enemies can change and not be enemies anymore with just the prayer of…
The life of Saint Benedict dramatically shaped Christianity development through the impacts of Benedicts Law on monarchism and my ministry today. Saint Benedict was born in about the year 480 AD. Many of the milestones in Benedict’s life are approximations as is the year of his birth. The only dated event of his life was in 542 AD when he was visited by a king at Monte Cassino. We know that he was an older man when he was visited by this king because he died shortly after the visit. St. Benedict was born in Nursia which is now Norcia in the province of Ubbria. Many believe his father was a Roman noble. We do not know the names of Benedict’s father and mother. Benedict had a twin sister named Scholastica, who is also a saint. When Benedict came of age he was sent to school in Rome to learn to be a noble man. He became very disillusioned with the corruption in Rome and with the lack of discipline he noticed from his peers. He left Rome and his education in order to live in solitude and discern God’s will.…
