Hist. 121
Movie Critique
Stand and Deliver is the movie I chose because I want to learn about latinos and how they are qualified in their education in America and because I want to learn about how much a person can succeed when their surroundings aren’t the safest to their life and future. I’ve seen many occasions where latino’s intelligence has been put down to the floor because of their culture, their background, and/or even the barrio they are from and aren’t given the support that they need. Reputation seems to matter a lot in American history. The way you represent yourself, the way you dress, or even the place you come from impacts many latinos studies in America. because it demonstrates us that the latin culture has been settle for less in education, business, work etc. because of the way they perform themselves among outer and inner groups, but even if the culture has a bad reputation they can always succeed when hard work is put into hands.
They also have the capacity to level themselves up from the low expectations society has put on the people with certain customs, traditions, and different barrios. Stand and Deliver the title says it all standing up and delivering what has been put into your hands. This movies shows to us Latinos and American education.
The American public school system could be improved in many places, as everyone knows and too often the public schools are places where instead of learning how to respect others and learn to think, teenagers learn how to victimize and/or terrorize others(survive victimization and living fear) and encounter the fact that being smart isn’t “cool.” There is no place where the crisis is more acute than in
the innercity schools of the major cities. Schools that barely earn the title, school.
Stand and Deliver is a movie filmed back in 1980’s in East Los Angeles, California in Garfield
High School. Garfield High School is a school on the verge of being decertified by the school district due to the poor academic results of the students. This school is very well corrupted by the …show more content…
students; teachers and staff have no hope for these students to develop positively in their academics because they are very well far behind in education. When professor Jaime Escalante walks into Garfield High School he is surprised to see that the school isn’t very equipped with resources that students need. Professor
Jaime Escalante starts working in Garfield High School as a math teacher, he sees that the students are far behind in their mathematical skills but he doesn’t give up on them. On the other hand, he starts doing all he can do to make class interesting so that the students can have the education that they need. Mr.
Escalante knows that these kids are not dumb they are just behind in their level of education. Students in
Mr. Escalante’s class complain about the work, the quizzes that are given to them in the beginning of each class and are having a hard time in learning the concept. But together Mr. Escalante and the students start putting hard work and succeed. After, Mr. Escalante seeing the improvement of his students wants to teach AP CALCULUS for the upcoming senior year of the students. The staff of the school do not think the students are prepared to take a course of advanced placement and think that the students will only put in hard work for nothing and disappoint themselves. Mr. Escalante has very high expectations and knows that he and his students can do it. In order to get the students ready for this advance placement course they are going to have to come in to class through their summer vacations 6 times a week including saturdays. Just how Mr. Escalante had planned the students came in and started preparing. Although they were preparing for an advance course, few students started to loose hope within themselves because they didn’t think they were smart enough. Moreover, students were slowly giving up, Mr. Escalante didn’t allow that to happen and started pushing his students more and more. They were finally prepared for the advance placement test and were nervous but confident. When the scores came in Garfield high school and the school district were surprise to see the incredible high scores in the
AP test performed by the students of GHS. After, seeing the scores diligently the students were victims of cheating. It was suspicious to the district that a high school with very low standards had students passing an advanced placement test and the students were required to take the AP test again. Even when the second exam was taken, 18 of the students passed with outstanding scores. Mr. Escalante was proud of the hard work of the students and proved many wrong.
The big question is why is this happening? This is happening because of the many stereotypes that are being made, if there is a young adult dressed with baggy pants or a girl with cloths showing all her body they are stupid and don’t care about school and don’t know anything. Society and school themselves make students education fail at times. In the movie Stand and Deliver, Garfield High school wasn’t an equipped school with sufficient resources to give a great education to these young adults. The students weren’t to be blamed for there far below education standards. But once they knew they had the capacity to stand up and deliver the power that they had in their own hands they leveled up. Not even the barrio they came from, their cultures, their traditions, their low understanding education wise was a reason for these students to stop what they were capable of doing with their own determination.
This doesn’t only apply to these students in Stand and Deliver but world wise. We seen it happen, we see it happening now. It only happens because of the language we speak and because of the color of
our skin. But even the discrimination that is being made just as with the students in Garfield High School stood up for themselves and proved many wrong with their hard work. There are many immigrants in
America being successful and proving that anything can be done when one is determine to be a success in life. You either sit down and don’t deliver or stand up and deliver what you have.
The lesson that can be taken out of this movie is that appearances and reputation shouldn’t matter in America because the intelligence is carried inside and inside the brain. This only shows that future generations will be more specifically criticized or pointed out for their looks. That will damage the future. Now in present day we see many teenage girls coming out pregnant. But that’s showing
only what’s on the outside. Many of these teenage girls have a brain that could be a help to America in times of necessity. I learned that when one is determined to fight they could win the battle.
