A Response to the 2013 Barack Obama State of the Union Address
Marco Rubio serves as a Republican senator representing Florida. He is 41 years old and a Cuban American. He is considered to be a rising star in the Republican Party. Some go as far as calling him the “Republican Savior”. He was picked to deliver the official Republican response to President Obama’s State of the Union Address. His response was delivered in both English and Spanish and also mentions his immigrant roots in hopes of rallying support of the Latino voter which played such a crucial role in Obama’s re-election. The context of the event is that the State of the Union address and its rebuttal are traditional activities, and are viewed as part of the American political system and its process. The first State of the Union Address, which was referred to as the Annual Message until 1934, was delivered by President Washington on January 8, 1790 (United States House of Representatives, n. d). It is mandated in the Constitution that the incumbent president should occasionally speak on the state of the union (United States House of Representatives, n. d).
The structure of the Rubio response is a combination of information, political views and discussion of the best of America, with contrasting views of the Obama administration and the Democratic agenda. The speech incorporates ideology, patriotism, partisanship, criticism, and talking points that include all of these
