Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish"- Steve Jobs (2005)

A non-descript farewell message on the back cover of the Whole Earth Catalogue-1974 edition, when it became the closing line of Mr. Jobs' commencement address to the Graduates of Stanford, went on to inspire many. And these words can best summarize my ideals.

I would like to introduce myself as Balaji Moorthy, a young prospective student from India aspiring to pursue my Masters in Management and Information Systems for 2015. With the impressive feedback from my seniors studying in your esteemed college and by perusing the internet extensively to gather

This led me to secure 82% in my higher secondary examination. I opted for Electrical and Electronics Engineering for under graduate studies in Sri Krishna College of Engineering and technology which is affiliated to the famous Anna University. My under graduate course work encompassed many aspects of management. Subjects like Principles of management and Total quality management gave me a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of management science. With my father’s illness and added responsibilities at home, my academic performance in second and third year of my studies suffered a lot and my GPA took a plunge. However, it only made me more motivated to work harder and restore my confidence. With extra hours and renewed focus, I was able to restore my GPA to a respectable figure. While it is way below what I feel I am capable of, I am proud that I could take care of my family when needed and still manage to complete my Under Graduate Degree securing First Class. I have also attended a number of technical symposiums and have also constantly kept myself updated by reading journals and magazines belonging to the IEEE. A dauntless spirit to explore the frontiers of engineering motivated me to attend a national conference at the Pondicherry Engineering college and present my project “++++++++” Where I was the

During Steve Jobs’ speech at the Stanford graduation, he gives the students advice on how to be happy in one’s life and career. He tells the graduating students that they should follow their passions and do what they love. However, Jobs’ advice is not very sound, and it is even slightly biased. Of course he believes that one should do whatever they love. He did what he loved and ended up creating a company worth $605 billion. While most people would like to do this, it would be very unrealistic to drop out of college and follow this dream like Jobs did. Instead of chasing impractical aspirations, it is best to work to find meaning in a practical job that will provide financial stability, and pursue passions in spare time. Doing this will ensure…

Motivation & Teamwork According to (Simon & Young (2005), the Macintosh team of nearly a hundred strong showed up for the second retreat in late September was a sharing of information, to bring everyone up to date on how each aspect of the development was proceeding and was also design to keep the ardor at a fever pitch. The slogan Steve wrote on the blackboard this time accurately captured the sprit of the group: “lets be pirates”. It brought a roar of approval. The he wrote another line that goaded the group, yet fired up their dedication: “Working 90 hours a week and Loving it!” he could probably have made the slaves building the pyramids or the rowers in a Roma gallery thrilled to be whipped, as a reminder that they were taking part in a noble effort. >> We believed that Jobs uses the McGregor X and Y theory, not only to manage his staff but also to motivate the staff and the team as a whole as well. Theory X, which is a more traditional approach, assumes that workers are lazy, lack of ambition, do not like responsibilities, self-centred, indifferent to organisational objectives, resistant to changes and are gullible (McGregor 2000, p. 7). These workers have to be driven and require management to intervene with carrot and stick management. Jobs used carrot and stick, and managed to retain and motivate lots of top-shelf talents. Jobs kept his A team selected designers, programmers and executives. Those who can work with him tend to be loyal (Leander Kahney, 2008) >>> add in a scenario – When people tried to shut down the Macintosh project, he fired those that go against the project and hired great employees. (Leander Kahney, 2008) On the contrary, Theory Y assumes that workers have a psychological need to work and will exercise self-control and initiatives when they are committed to a set of objectives. They also want achievement and seek responsibility. (McGregor 2000, p. 7) Ratzlaff, a soft-spoken creative…

Even though Steve Jobs never graduated college, he is considered one of the most charismatic orators of our generation. As Chief Executive Officer of Apple Computer Inc., he has taken the company to new heights through his powerful and entertaining speeches. In one of his more serious speeches, addressed to the Stanford University, he delivered what I think is the most inspiring speech to this day. His main point was to “...have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” He also makes a point to stress living for today. "If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right”, is how Mr. Jobs tells us to live.…
