Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men was based on great depression time ( Late 1920’s) in USA. The time of high employment and when the economy was weak farmers used to travel farm to farm on their own to find their way of living. Among most of the farmers they tend to be disconnected with each other and most of their time feeling loneliness and trying to survive within them. So Steinbeck exaggerates the theme of loneliness from characters mainly such as Curley’s wife ,Crookes , Old Candy, George and Lennie also the Negro man. Therefore Curley’s wife comes as whole as in the novel as it explores the Steinbeck theme of loneliness and isolation.
Curley’s wife is a dispensable and Steinbeck explores as she is the centre of the debate that develops the conflicts among ranch workers. As in the book Steinbeck explores George as being astute and Lennie being innocent human being how he was staring at Curley’s wife when she entry in to Men’s cabin and also Geroge’s advice to Lennie is “Don’t you even take a look! Never seen a piece of jail bait worse than her”, author describes this as the between “wisdom of heart” and “ Wisdom of head” and supports the importance of Curley’s wife in the novel.
On the otherhand author describes Curley’s wife as she enter in to ranch hut and “rectangle of sunshine in the doorway was cut off” and Steinbeck explains the word “girl standing there looking in”, the innocence of Curley’s wife as compared to a girl. However Lennie being innocent character he thinks “she’s Purty” and Steinbeck explores George as being astute and sees straight through Curley’s wife’s playful talk, “ She’s rat trap”.
In the novel Steinbeck explore as Curley’s wife seeks male attention which suggests that she doesn’t get enough attention form Curley, as we can see from Corley’s character later in the book. Also in the book itself shows that Curley’s wife is lonely insecure woman and somewhat if she think men
