This week's readings involved introductions to problems faced by the Chicano community. It depicts how far back these cultural problems have arose and how the community continues to struggle and overcome it. For example, in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, it is a historical document stating peace, friendship, limits, and settlement for the people of Mexico and the United States. This treaty was drafted in 1848, which ended the Mexican-American War, in hopes for a better relationship between the two countries. In contrast, in the poem, I am Joaquin, the poet brings light how the treaty is broken and how the Chicano people and all people represented in the poem are oppressed socially, economically, culturally, and politically, by the "Gabachos".…

The ER waiting room smelled stale. Sick babies and toddlers were crying, waiting to see a doctor. My brother was laying on the tan tiled hospital floor. He was shaking terribly as the antibiotics from the previous hospital wore off and the infection set in more. Both of his hands were red and swollen. His right hand, had a black mark from where the IV initially infected. His left hand was swollen to the size of a small balloon, kind of like a blown up rubber glove I used to get from the doctor when I was younger. My mom took her jacket off to cover him. His skin was hot to the touch but he was still freezing. His fever was 101.2 but there were no open rooms in the ER at our second attempt at a hospital. We had to get him antibiotics…

War. When looking at the international community war seems to be the one thing we can always count on to be present. The majority of us do not seem to realize that there is always a war going on somewhere in the world. We go on living our cushy lives while people all over the world are suffering. One thing we may not realize is that we are in the midst of a war ourselves. This war has been going on since 1947, and it was thought to have ended in 1991. But did the Cold War really ever end? No it did not. Yes the war between the United States and the Soviet Union that was thought to have ended 24 years ago never really did. Tensions between the United States and Russia have increased gradually since the supposed end of the Cold War, which leads…

The eldest of Frank and Isobel Hawking's four children, Stephen William Hawking was born on the 300th anniversary of the death of Galileo—long a source of pride for the noted physicist—on January 8, 1942. He was born in Oxford, England, into a family of thinkers. His Scottish mother, Isobel Hawking, had earned her way into Oxford University in the 1930s—a time when few women thought of going to college—making her one of the college's first female students. His father, Frank Hawking, another Oxford graduate, was a respected medical researcher with a specialty in tropical diseases. Stephen Hawking's birth came at an inopportune time for his parents, who didn't have much money. The political climate was also tense, as England was dealing with World War II and the onslaught of German bombs. In an effort to seek a safer place to have their first child, Frank moved his pregnant wife from their London home to Oxford. The Hawking’s would go on to have two other children, Mary (1943) and Philippa (1947). A second son, Edward, was adopted in 1956. In 1963 Hawking’s had many tests done on his well being and found that he had ALS and the doctors said he would die in 2 years. Hawking's quest for big answers to big questions includes his own personal desire to travel into space. In 2007, at the age of 65, Hawking made an important step toward space travel. While visiting the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, he was given the opportunity to experience an environment without gravity. He has also gone on to do many more things which I will go into detail about in this essay.…

I have been very lucky that my disability has not been a serious handicap. Indeed, it has probably given me more time than most people to pursue the quest for knowledge. The ultimate goal is a complete theory of the universe, and we are making good progress.” As we can see Stephan hawking starts from his disability then starts talking about a pursuit for knowledge then ends of to find a complete theory of the universe, Stephan also uses antistrophe we see this in “The first is that we have fossils of algae from 3.5 billion years ago. The Earth was formed 4.6 billion years ago and was probably too hot for about the first half billion years.…

I’ve also learned to try new things, even if said things seem impossible. After all, the doctors told me that walking and running would be impossible, and yet I deceived them. The doctors told my parents that I’d never be able to play sports, and yet I have the awards to prove I can. The doctors told me I would have challenges in life, but everyone has challenges. For example, I have a learning disability called auditory processing. Auditory processing makes it difficult for me to process verbal instructions or even to filter out background noise. With auditory processing, I have learned to advocate for myself in the classroom, at diving and in the other areas of my life. I’m a go-getter and will not back down if an obstacle is in my way like the extremely difficult front three and a half dive. I credit this attitude of overcoming to the many challenges that I must rise above in order to become a successful national and international diver.…
