An individual studying in criminal investigation needs to know and understand the four main principles dealing with Criminal Investigation. Knowing when and how to apply the principles is also important. The Principles start with the methods of inquiry, two is the mindset of the investigator and how to prepare yourself, three is the scientific methods, and four knowing the four primary sources of information and how to obtain them. Criminal investigation governs the investigation crimes altogether and throughout this paper I will be discussing the process in criminal procedures; taking an in depth look at what investigators do from start to finish; and using an example scenario to give a general breakdown.
Criminal investigation sets the stage for everything, from finding who committed the crime why they committed, where crime occurred and when crime occurred. Many of us can go back to grade school and remember our teachers telling us to write a book report answering the who, what, when, where how and why questions from the book and explaining the plot. Let’s look at criminal investigation as being that way. Criminal investigation is important in the justice field because it brings criminals who commit these crimes to justice and gives rest to the family of the victim.
The Process A criminal investigation is a mystery that needs to be solved and is up to law enforcement officials to solve once it has been established that a crime has been committed.
