Marx, Weber and Durkheim would undoubtedly have three very different views on this division of labour based on their reflection of society.
For instance, Marx would see this division as a societal conflict, the core personnel are the oppressor, they usually belong to higher classes, they hold a position of power and make more profit from the product than the support personnel. The latter, in fact, tends to come from the lower classes, they are the oppressed, although greater in number, their labour is exploited, they can be easily replaced and are paid much less. This division is the natural result of capitalism, Marx would claim that the only solution to this inequality is the revolution.
Weber, whose view, albeit different, is derived from Marx’s works, would also consider this division the result of capitalism. However, according to him, this is only the most rational method of working in a modern society such as ours. As a matter of fact, the sociologist believed that in non-traditional societies humans will always strive for efficiency, in this case, the division between core personnel and support personnel is the most effective method of dividing labour.
