In the film, Crash, how the characters connect to our identity unit along the lines of Ethnic Notations that we have been working on it includes racism, prejudice, stereotype, bias, social status, and so forth. For example, in Crash is similar to What Would You Do? along the lines of the interracial couple situation.…

In the book “Asian America Through the Lens”, Xing discussed that Asian American aesthetics is usually defined as “consciousness” or “sensitivity” by various filmmakers. He further elaborated that the reason for this is because filmmakers make films from their consciousness. Resulting from the idea of who they are and how they view themselves in the society. Some of the common themes I have seen in Asian American films are the emphasis in performing dance and song, traditional family values, and culture. In the film “Flower Drum Song”, the journey of Mei Li started when a traditional family of Sammy Fong ordered him a picture bride from Hong Kong. Sammy Fong has his eye already with Linda Low so he made his way to transfer…
stereotype. It seems like more and more, Hispanic women are portrayed as the hoop earring and latex glove wearing cleaning cleaning servant. An example of this in film is Jennifer Lopez’s characters in the 2002 romantic comedy Maid in Manhattan. Even the big stars aren’t safe from such stereotypical roles. It’s estimated that the American-Mexican actress Lupe Ontiveros played the role as a maid almost 150 times! The second stereotype is the Latin Lover. For years Hispanic men have been portrayed as the suave, sexy, and smooth talking lover. Spanish actor Antonio Banderas is one of the faces of this stereotype appearing in Original Sin. Contra el Viento, and Of Love and Shadows, as the “Latin Lover.” The opposite of this stereotype is the Sexpot…
Hollywood is amongst the top in power of the media empire in the United States, the productions that come out, become believed representations of the audiences that watch them, bringing down many that are shown in those productions. With audiences that are more than majority a darker color, than what are represented in Hollywood films, it brings to attention just how much of a problem it comes be. Minorities should be just part of the Hollywood creation, holding a social responsibility to derail from creating unrealistic stereotypes of ethnic characters that pigeonhole them, due to reasons of not having enough diversity in films and TV shows, create unwelcome clichés, and whitewashing over others cultures.…
For decades, Asian-Americans are portrayed by the media as a successful minority. As the academic achievement of Asian-Americans soared in recent years, the model minority stereotype of Asian-Americans has become remarkably popular in the United States. The model minority stereotype indicates that “Asian-Americans, through their hard work, intelligence, and emphasis on education and achievement, have been successful in American society.”…
A lot if TV shows now a days are very satirical and stereotypical. There is one TV show which catches my attention more than any other and that show happens to be Black-ish. It takes a black family who happens to more fortunate than others but that doesn’t change the way people perceive them, to other races there still just Black.…
As an Asian-American, I have experienced the Model-Minority stereotypes firsthand. During my time in education, many, whether it be my teachers, my peers, complete strangers, or my family, I was expected to be a good student, to be good in Math, to listen to authority, and to be successful. As I grew older, I started to have a different perspective of the stereotypes. I saw the effects the stereotypes would have on my siblings and, in turn, they would give us younger siblings advice based on their experiences. So, us younger siblings would have a different outlook on our futures and who we are as Asian-Americans. With this new perspective, when talking to Asian-Americans who were younger than me, I noticed that they would want…
The people who are the unhappiest in this world are those who care what others think of themselves. From American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang, Jin facial expressions would show him being worried and often thinking. Not caring what others may think of themselves is a choice someone should make to benefit. Before judging a person based on generalizations about a whole race, people need to understand every person is a unique individual. Some of the worst Asian American model minority myths include those that characterize Asian Americans as invariably exceptional students, those that claim that Asian American often become doctors, lawyers, engineers, and pharmacists, and those that say that Asian Americans have language barriers. Stereotypes…
However, to say that the stereotypes of Asians are completely wrong would be a blatant overstatement. Stereotypes exist for a reason. As psychologist Saul McLeod explains, “The use of stereotypes is a major way in which we simplify our social world; since they reduce the amount of processing (i.e. thinking) we have to do when we meet a new person” (MacLeod). Close examination of the average Asian American’s values reveal Confucian influences. A 1999 study by psychologists Brian Kim, Donald Atkisnon, and Peggy Yan from University of California, Santa Barbara, identified 14 Asian values. While the researchers stated that, “We must recognize that Asian Americans are comprised of an extremely diverse group and that significant differences within Asian ethnic groups do exist,” they found that traditional Asians tended to emphasize these values: collectivism, maintenance of interpersonal harmony, reciprocity,…
When you think of Asians-Americans in school, what are the things that come to the mind? They know math well? They are intelligent? They can help you with your homework? Well there are many stereotypes of Asians however the point is that Asians- Americans students are succeeding in school simply because it has something to do with the way they were raised and not the way they were born or even living up to their stereotypes. Asians- Americans put forth effort into their schoolwork and take education seriously. In reality no race is more intelligent than the other despite of what the public believes. Their parents brought them up to be respectable and obey their parents while the average America students are more focused on their hanging with…
When it comes to Voting participation, those who have a higher socio-economic status are likely to have a higher voter turnout/participation rate. However that is not the case for Asian American voters. With Asian Americans having some of the highest level of income and education, they still result in low voter turnout in general elections. With Asian American political participation being a puzzling phenomena, there are bloc of reasons for their bizarre voting behavior. The reasons for lower turnout rates among the group of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are due to pan ethnicity, rates of immigration, English proficiency, and lack of representation.…
In the first six months of 2012, the police, security guards, and self appointed agents of “justice” have killed 110 African-American men, women, and children. Since its publication, there have been 10 additional killings in total, 2012, which means that in 2012, there has been 1 killing every 36 hours. Many of these deaths are the consequences of stop and frisk policies, racial profiling, and a culture of White racist stereotyping of African Americans as criminals and suspects. According to Rosa Clemente, a member of Malcolm X Grassroots Movement and former vice-presidential candidate of the Green Party, “Nowhere is a Black woman or man safe from racial profiling, invasive policing, constant surveillance, and overriding…
Although an Asian American woman identify as both Asian American and woman, they are often told to pick a side when advocating. Much like the identity of a woman, this identity is also sexualized, but at a heightened level because of their Asian American identity. The two main stereotypes are the China Doll/Geisha, submissive and passive, and Dragon Lady, predatory devious. They are seen as exotic and therefore fetishized. Additionally, they are impacted by traditional views that consider men as superior, pressure women to marry, and have high beauty…
