Stereotypes In Sociology

The word Stereotype is commonly referred to as a “label” that has been given to a person, or group of people based on certain perceptions or thoughts. For example, one man might wear tight jeans and a cowboy hat; therefore, he might be labeled as a “Country Boy.” Another example would be that if a black man eats chicken all the time, then that must mean all black men eat chicken. Stereotypes are found all over the world. We make generalizations about people based on what we have seen from movies, or what we have read in magazines. In fact, the word Stereotype has become more and more like the word Prejudice. Over the years, society has shaped these two words into just one meaning. …show more content…
For instance, some people can look at a person and automatically determine in their mind what type of person they are just by how they may be dressed, or how they may be acting at that certain time. They make collective judgments about people, without even getting to know them one on one. These predetermined concepts about people can eventually lead to dislike, or hatred. In my opinion, the main thing in which stereotype and prejudice have in common is ignorance. People should not be hated, or liked based on what they look like or what ethnic background they come from. In my opinion, you should get to know a person before making judgments about
