They were three teenagers who were accused of killing three eight-year-old boys in West Memphis, Arkansas. The three convicted were Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley, and Jason Baldwin. These three boys were innocent, and none of the evidence led to them, but they listened to heavy metal and donned black clothing, so they were convicted because of the stereotypes. They served 18 years in prison for a crime they never committed, and Echols was put on death row. Echols’ appeals were the only thing that kept him from being executed. Once again, there can be some cases of this, but that is often not the case. We don’t listen to heavy metal because we despise the world or because we have a desire for death, but because it is something we can sometimes relate to. It can be a way for people to release anger in a non-violent way.
