These actions can come from either those who are expressing a bias, or even those who are affected by them. Those who experience these prejudices likely commit violent acts as a result of wanting to fight back oppression. Some of these actions may be taken as a form of self-defense, as a way to gain equal opportunities, or due to a buildup of anger. Violence can also be committed by those who hold these views. These days, we hear so much news about people committing acts of crime against specific groups of people, especially those in the black, Muslim, or LGBTQ+ community. These violent crimes are committed due to superficial ideas and beliefs about them, which likely only apply to a very small percentage of individuals. This violence can be a result of hatred towards that group or as a form of fighting back when the victim tries to speak up. This typically occurs when a negative behaviour is connected to all members of a specific group. For example, while doing the Airplane Simulation in class, I decided to sit with the former high-security prisoner. When asked to answer what I thought the prisoner looked like, I automatically thought of a male who was of Mexican descent. This is a prejudgment that I have made of those who are male Mexicans based on inadequate information obtained from movies and TV shows. In real life, similar acts are seen within the education system, as we have discussed in class. The media portrays black people as uninterested in getting a proper education. This leads many teachers to provide fewer opportunities and resources for them, even though the stereotype is not true for a majority of black students. This isolates them within the school community from students who are successful, and will further isolate them in the future on a class level when they are unable to get high skilled jobs due to their lack of education.
