Stereotypes Of Skyler White
Sometimes the characters on tv shows can feel one dimensional and flat, like walking talking stereotypes. There is only a short amount of screen time for writers to allow each character, which can lead to them feeling less like a person and more like a caricature. It is a sign of good writing when a show’s characters can not be summerized in one word. The writers of the tv series Breaking Bad have definitely succeeded in that. The people depicted in their show are genuine and interesting. Skyler White is a complex and multifaceted person that shows the care and concern she feels by being controlling and headstrong. When we are first introduced to Skyler we are immediately made aware that she is the one normally in control of her household. …show more content…
While they are shopping for Walt Jr.’s clothing in the “Pilot,” Skyler’s behavior seems particularly overbearing. Her son seems completely exasperated with her, giving us a feeling that this is how she always acts during shopping trips. But when looked at from Skyler’s point of view it is rather understandable why she behaves in such away. It is very unlikely that this is the only instance where the White family has had to deal with people bullying or discriminating against Walt Jr. and Skyler can not confront every person who does so. From the perspective of a loving mother, this is a very distressing fact of life. So she distracts herself and the others by constantly asking her son questions about the jeans and ends up coming off as …show more content…
It’s not until she shouts “I don’t want him to die at all!” nearly in tears that it really, truly hits the audience what this means for Skyler. This is not Skyler simply ignoring Walter’s choice to live the rest of his life how he wants to, this is her being rightfully scared and unwilling to lose the man she loves. It is ultimately very selfish of her but also understandable. She is a mother of a son with a disability, has another baby on the way, and has just learned her husband is dying. It is only natural that she wants to fight the inevitable for the man she loves. She denies Walter’s impending death so much because she does not want to lose

Walter then realizes his mistakes and comes to the conclusion that his family comes before money. When Walter was talking to Linder at the end of the book when Linder thought that the Younger’s were going to take his money. Walter stated “And we have decided that we will move into our house because my father-my father earned it for us brick by brick. We don’t want to cause no trouble for nobody or fight no causes, and we will try and be good neighbors . And that’s all we got to say about it . We don’t want your money”(148) Considering this Walter at the beginning of the book would've had happily taken Linder's money because all he cared about is money. Furthermore, this accurately depicts Walters evolution as a character from being a boy who only cared about money to a man who has realized that money isn't the most important thing in the world. Moreover in the same conversation with Linder. Walter said, “And my sister over there she going to be a doctor and we are very proud.”(148) Furthermore, this depicts that Walter is no longer a selfish person and respects the dreams of his family members . In the beginning of the play Walter did not want Beneatha to go to medical school or become a doctor because it would take away money that would be available for his dream however now Walters supports his sister’s…

Recognizing Walter’s transition from protagonist to “antagonist” becomes difficult to understand through the content and storyline due to a flood of information and the lack of common knowledge about the process of cooking and selling methamphetamine. Furthermore, Vince Gilligan’s portrayal of the protagonist, Walter White, takes on the role of being an “antagonist” being perceived as a character that gets lost in greed, but Gilligan throws in phrases in episode 6 like “I am doing this for my family” or in episode seven when Walter states how “he only needed enough for his family.” But while nothing seems to go on plan, an antagonist rises out of Walter White as his initial goals derail from his initial moral values. Typically, films and television shows in the 20th and 21st century give a clear depiction of good and evil that provides the audience with a side to choose from. However, in Breaking Bad, the story’s sympathetic portrayal of Walter White uses the audience’s knowledge of his tragic situation in the beginning of the series to influence the pardoning of his crimes. This shows that our moral compass can become secondary towards our initial moral and social benchmark, and going on our own path to accomplish a goal, whether we have to become the antagonist…
