Sontag
was able to communicate realistic situations supporting many forms of stereotyping committed against women that are in support of her statement she made about how women are looked at, which offered clarification about the art of objectifying women. Her statement also offered clarification about the importance of stereotypes and the role they play in media, which is applicable with today’s media practices. The audience has come to understand stereotypes as true representations of women, although some stereotypes were true, stereotyping has been a method that creates oppression against women and their culture.
Today, the media still present women and men as not equal, but many of today’s women are growing less tolerant of unacceptable behavior and are speaking up against these practices using media technology in an effort to bring awareness to the damage stereotyping can cause and by creating awareness encourages conversations that may lead to a solution. Sontag reveals how men are stereotyped and depicted in the media as stronger, smarter and richer than women and how men are not looked at in photographs for their beauty, but are seen for their intelligence and their accomplishments. Many decades of stereotyping suffered by women perpetuated by the mass media is a powerful oppression placed on women that existed when Susan Sontag wrote about her observations in her essay are still true today and women today are still striving for equality building on what accomplishments made by women throughout history.
