9.2 The Miracle Question

The following quote is Steve de Shazer’s miracle question: “Now, I want to ask you a strange question. Suppose that while you are sleeping tonight and the entire house is quiet, a miracle happens. The miracle is that the problem which brought you here is solved. However because you are sleeping, you don’t know that the miracle has happened. The client can be asked about the transformations that significant others may observe once the change has started to be mobilised ( Cotton, 2010 ).

9.4 Exception questions

Corey ( 2014 ) describes exceptions as earlier experiences that were different from what usually occur. SFBT explored those instances when the problem was absent or less prominent. When asking these questions, the counsellor draws out the client’s strengths, thereby empowering the client to construct their goals on earlier accomplishments and render the problem insignificant ( Von Cziffra-Bergs, 2014 ).

The counsellor prompts the client for information about what was different when the problem did not happen or was less prominent. Exception questions can help the client to recognise positive input that was already implemented previously and can be applied in future. Exception questions can be used at different instants during the sessions.Exception questions can also be effectively applied when the client start to engage in problem talk. The counsellor then redirects the conversation to a time when the client managed the problem ( Cotton, 2010

Clients are often uncooperative at this stage, and the Skilled Helper will assist in changing negative patterns of thought. In SFBT, the Skilled Helper will facilitate the problem- oriented thinking patterns to change to solution-oriented thinking. This phase will assist in creating goals. Skills that will be valuable is explorative in nature starting with empathy, open-ended questions for example miracle question in SFBT, the paraphrasing and reflection, organising, and summarising ( Nelson, 2007
