Xin Steve Jobs: The Powerful Engine of America In 1976, a young man and his friend, both of whom were not wealthy, started a computer company called “Apple” in a small garage in California. Ten years later, the young man was expelled from the company which he created; he then started a new business named “Pixar”, which attempted to make animation movies by using computer technology. After over thirty years, Apple, the computer company, has become the most valuable company in the world, and Pixar has become one of the most famous animationproduction companies. The man who started these successes is Steve Jobs. His talented nature, effective …show more content…
management, and incomparable innovations made a significant change to the computer technology and movie industry in the United States. Unruliness was part of Jobs’ nature: He used to study at Reed College, but dropped out after the first six months. “After six months, I couldn 't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK” (1). Apple is one of Jobs’ greatest creations, his empire of innovation. At the beginning, the company was just a small work shop started in a small garage, but now it has become the most valuable enterprise on this planet. Ten years after Apple was created, the Board of Directors decided to expel Jobs because he and his crew “had a falling out” due to their different image of the future even though he was one of the founders of Apple (Jobs 1). After expelled from Apple, Jobs started other two businesses, Pixar and NeXT. His new businesses made good performance;

Xin Pixar even became world-famous in the near future. However, Apple didn’t perform that well. After Jobs left, the “falling out” didn’t stop. Years of losses made Apple almost bankrupt. In 1996, Apple invited Steve Jobs back to take charge. “When Steve Jobs returned to Apple, he was able to implement his revolutionary management philosophy and the results were extraordinary,” Steve Denning suggests. Jobs had an effective management over Apple. Since Jobs came back, many people have been dismissed

from Apple. The quality of products became the most important thing of the whole company (1). “He knew the company had to make money to stay alive, but he shifted Apple’s focus of Apple away from profits. Profit was viewed as necessary, but not sufficient, to justify everything Apple did. That attitude resulted in a company that is entirely different from any 20th Century company. Apple had undergone a phase change,” Denning stated in his report (1). The efforts of Jobs finally paid off. The Apple products, such as MacBook, iPad, and iPhone, are now becoming the symbols of this decade and pushing the limits of human achievement. Macintosh started the use of color monitors. In 1986, Michael Dhuey, a young Apple engineer, proposed a plan to make a “six-slot, modular, color-enabled Macintosh”; Dhuey’s plan won out of three Mac upgrade projects; then 16 people worked together and successfully made the first personal computer with colored monitor --- Macintosh II (Edwards 16). Now, color monitors have been widely used on computers; browsing images and watching videos are no more difficult to perform. The performance of display is now becoming an important factor for buyers while they are choosing their computers. iOS device is another talented creation of Apple. The whole world was impressed when Jobs introduced iPods, iPhone, and iPad to real life.

On June 26th, 2007, Apple first released iPhone.
It “made a splash in the smart phone market.” The third-party applications give the phone a lot of functions. Within one year, iPhone made a great influence on other mobile smartphones and on the design of applications for mobile operating system. Also, since iPhone is capable of accessing Internet, it “has raised consumer interest--especially in the U.S.--in the concept of truly mobile access to the Internet” (Krazit 1). On January 27th, Jobs introduced iPad to real life. At that time, Apple changed the world again. The ten-inch tablet with smart operating system made a lot of things easier: on the one hand, millions of applications make it possible for iPad to perform countless types of tasks; on the other hand, relatively smaller size of the tablet makes it much more convenient for people to carry it. The concise, fashionable appearance of these devices makes them look like work of arts. Besides, the internal operating systems of Apple are powerful. Mac OS and iOS were developed individually to improve the performance of Apple devices. According to the comments from Louisiana State University, “integrated hardware and software, visually appealing, quick development, unity of apps, secure, powerful with the Unix underpinnings” are six features of Mac OS and iOS (History of OSX and iOS 9). These six features can offer users a very delightful experience. Due to this, Apple made a great success on market. Competitions among …show more content…
companies can always make a good effect on consumers. After Apple’s success, other manufactures, such as Google and Microsoft, also attempted to enter this industry and to make a fortune out of it. Google developed Android for phones and tablets; Microsoft designed Windows for computers and Windows Phone for mobile devices. Within a few years, the competition in this industry became extremely fierce; however, the consumers have more options while buying and more functions while using.
Xin Pixar is another prodigious enterprise Jobs generated. Pixar was run by Jobs after he had been expelled from Apple. Since then, a big amount of fascinating movies were produced from this fun factory. Before Pixar, Disney was the monopoly of the animation movie industry. Disney owned its own studios in Hollywood and employed many talented filmmakers. However, Disney put most of its efforts on the traditional ways of making animation. Pixar went in another direction: the company decided to use computer technology to make animations. “Pixar was ‘not the only [studio] working on [computer animation] for movies,’ said David Cohen, an editor at Variety. But ‘they were the ones that succeeded and showed everybody how to do it, both technologically and creatively, and the extent [to which] that changed the entertainment landscape is hard to overstate,’” Daniel Terdiman reports in his research (1). In 1995, “Toy Story” came to screen and made a big success. The movie was the first full-length computer-made animation. In the following years, Pixar produced many other famous movies, such as “A Bug’s Life” and “Toy Story 2.” Jobs’ vision promoted the development of Pixar. He believed that one day Pixar will become an animation production company as great as Disney and made several right decisions for Pixar. One week after “Toy story” was released; Jobs oversaw the IPO of Pixar, and over the years, Pixar 's 12 feature films have made a profit of about 7.2 billion dollars around the world, according to The-Numbers.com (Terdiman 1). Based on the success of these movies, an entirely new animation industry was created in Hollywood (Terdiman 1). The giants of film-making industry, such as Paramount and Disney, also came to this industry and started to make animations with computer.

Xin Now in Hollywood, a “Best Animated Feature Academy Award” was set for animation makers. According to this, at least an animation will be put on market every single month. “That 's a completely different world than before Pixar” David Cohen pointed out (Terdiman 1). Life was not easy for Jobs. What drives him to make greater progress is his endless

passion. “Stay hungry, Stay foolish.” Jobs told every Stanford graduate in 2005. (1) Although he has never graduated from college, but he made a greater achievement than most of college students did. He can come up with innovative ideas and, more significantly, he has the courage to do what he wants to do. Martin Zwilling reports that there are “7 principles behind Steve Jobs ' innovative genius” mentioned in Carmine Gallo’s book; “Do what you love” is the very first one. He also suggests that “Passion fueled Apple’s rocket and Jobs’ vision created the destination” (1). Jobs is an explorer, he used all his heart to run Apple and Pixar, all his passion to find the path to a brighter future. He is not only a powerful engine of his enterprises; he is the powerful engine of America.
