Steve Magnolis Speech Summary

A business degree is one of the most useful and versatile majors a person can have, which might be why most undergraduate students choose business administration as their major. In Steve Magnolis’ speech, he gave observations of different subjects that ultimately built his goal of informing the audience about the importance of work ethic. This USD alumni visited our campus in early October and gave a presentation for the Beacom School of Business. The purpose of his speech was to inform as well as persuade. He reached his objectives by using his own personal experiences at an attempt to enlighten the audience. What first caught my attention was Steve Magnolis’ mention of his parents in the greek system here at the University of South Dakota. This showed me that he was very mindful of his audience and that he had a lot of experiences on this campus. This motivated me to pay closer attention. The main points of this speech were: the ability to take responsibility for your own actions, the importance of work ethic and self-drive, doing the best one can do, problems with the American education system, and group behavior.
When he switched subjects, you could only guess that he had another main point to discuss. Often, it was difficult to choose which main point he was trying to explore because he never explicitly stated it. He also used a lot of different personal experiences to explain his main points which made it easier to understand and relate to the points he was trying to make. Some specific examples he used was his grandfather’s journey to find success in America by working hard and opening up his first Greek restaurant or Steve Magnolis’ rejection of his artistic dreams from his
