It was a home game, the last game of region play, and the author talks about how tensions were running high between the two teams and the two crowds. It goes on to talk about how easily they defeated the rabbits by playing an unselfish game, and ended in victory defending the title from the west side for another year. The article talks about how amazing each of the senior players were this year, and how they were superstars on and off the court. “They led their team through the example of kindness and positive attitudes,” the article goes on to say. Over the past four years at Millard High School they have grown into tough competitors and beautiful young women, and states that there is no doubt they will succeed greatly in the…
They denied her individualism in order to protect the school's reputation. She was the face of the program and nothing could interfere with that or future recruitment into the program. She was singles out like other kids who chose to set up group meetings in secret. They were made to feel different when in all actuality they were like an other human being. Towards the end of the book, I was disappointed to read the Coach Kim didn’t realize or want to admit how Brittney was censored and made to feel different. I don’t think she went there for an apology but rather understanding and to move forward. However, Coach Kim felt, “ I needed to set things right at Baylor because I had created tension in the administration” (Griner:213) which I found rather shocking. I think anyone who had given up so much of who they were to please an institution would be offended. There was nothing she needed to set right because she followed their rules. Throughout all of it she was able to push through the barriers and become one of the Best Women’s National Basketball Player…
He was instantly liked because of his easy going manner. He played basketball for the Iola Bulldogs. They were a Class 2A school during his last two years there. "He'd keep practices real light," said Iola's basketball coach then, Rob Stewart. "I'd get on him, and he'd give me the goofy smile." As a junior Chris averaged a triple double. This did not get him much attention. His coach mailed out copies of his box score after his first game of his senior year. He received a lot of replies. The field of interested colleges was greatly reduced because of his grades. Because of this Chris chose to go to Blinn College where he played for Coach Joe Curl. Coach Curl left and things did not go well with the new coach. Chris ended up quitting basketball before…

There were several popular basketball players that were Jewish at that time just like there is a prevalence of African-American talented basketball players nowadays. Brenda, in a way, wants to elevate Neil by using sports and thus by initiating him to them and to her family’s approach to them. She succeeds evidently as she mentions to him how much they resemble each other in the way they are dressed (p.609). Neil believes he understood what she was insinuating: “She meant, I was sure, that I was somehow beginning to look the way she wanted me to. Like herself.”…

Sabin was 7 years old at the time and had to move around with her older sister, Mary, quite a bit as they were passed along relatives moving from Denver, to Chicago with their uncle Albert Sabin, and then to Vermont where they stayed with their paternal grandparents. Both Sabin and her sister attended Vermont Academy and later pursued further education and moved to attend Smith College (a private,…
Wooden would leave a legacy at UCLA which would set expectations for future coaches at unattainable heights, though he never even discussed winning or losing. Wooden simply considered himself a teacher of good habits. A man who is uncomfortable being thought of as a legend, Wooden never set out to do anything more than to teach young men how to be the best they could be, both at basketball and in life. His discipline, standards, ideals, loyalty, dedication, and self-control were all important factors that would cause him to become the leader at UCLA which all future coaches would be measured against.…

Normally, teenagers progressively receive more responsibilities as they age until they turn 18 and are capable of learning the rest on their own. This wasn't the case, however, for teenager Antone Bazil Coutts, also known as Joe. His mother was raped when he was only thirteen and lived a somber, isolated lifestyle from then on, leading to his inevitable passage into adulthood happening at an earlier stage in life than it should have. Louise Erdrich foreshadows this in the first chapter of The Round House through the image of the Handbook of Federal Indian Law, by Felix Cohen. This book symbolizes Joe's mental coming of age and his rapid maturation into the new realm of adulthood.…
she played and started every game. The team was able to advance to nationals two out of the three years. Many memories were made with her teammates. One memory was at a home game, the gym was completely packed full of fans that supported Mesa university and the rival team, the Cardinals. Each year the two teams go to 5 five games, that are too close to call. The intensity in each one of the girls faces radiate and rub off onto the crowd. Mesa won the first two matches with little effort, then for the first time in the entire game the other girls started to hit the ball with power. The ball was bouncing off the blocks, out of bounds, serves were being served into the net. The team was falling apart. After the last time out was called and the…
