Nonprofit managers need to be able to solve a variety of problems. Knowledge and skills are the tools within the metaphorical tool boxes and will enable us to find the right situations. Having a large tool box will ensure we are able to fix a wider variety of problems ,but knowing how to use each tool and when to the tool is the most important part of problem solving. Stewardship is defined as the ethics that surrounds being able to responsibly use and manage an organization's resources. Part of stewardship is strategic planning.

Each assessment is designed for a different type of organization or situation. There is not a universal assessment that will work for everyone. An organization’s leaders need to have the ability to identify the best assessment for their organization. The second document illustrates my ability to go into my “nonprofit toolbox” look at the different forms of assessment and choose the one best suit the organization I represent at that time. I chose to include my paper on the form 990 and the importance of the form in this section of my portfolio because the paper documents the importance of building trust with the community, the way the 990 leads to financial transparency and the importance of fulfilling the IRS requirements that will allow a nonprofit organization to continue operating as a tax exempt business. A nonprofit must maintain its reputation of excellence in order to inspire the public's trust, which is why financial literacy and stewardship are so important. Donors do not want to give money to unstable organizations that are constantly in financial woes. Unlike the business sector it is rare for a nonprofit to receive a financial bailout. My feelings on the topic are outlined in the document Bail Outs in this section of my portfolio. I wanted to include this paper in my portfolio because it shows the importance financial stewardship. When leaders fail to practice financial stewardship they risk the organization having to close their doors permanently. The next document I chose to include was the first part of my NMP 600 final. This paper reviews the way in which a small nonprofit theater group operating in a basement grew into a critically acclaimed theater. By making a series of smart
