Mallards, husbands death, making her vulnerable, and powerless without her significant other. Not only is Mrs. Mallard fragile physically, but spiritually as well. The couple was interdependent on one another, and after the tragic train car crash, Mrs. Mallard was forced into thinking for herself.
Within her contemplation Mrs. Mallard became aware of the struggles of being alone. Without her significant other she would have been forced into a lifetime of loneliness. As moments passed Mrs. Mallard began to visualize a free life. She realized without Mr. Mallard everything in her possession would be hers. No longer would Mrs. Mallard be forced to answer to her partner but live a life free of command. As Mrs. Mallard graciously accepted the news of her husbands death you began to find strength in her weakness.
In era filled with prejudice against women, Mrs. Mallard would have been a symbol of strength to those women who had also lost a loved one and were forced into becoming widows. Mr. Mallard death brought a new beginning for an old women. In this time of contemplation Mrs. Mallard had prepared herself to face her new found but not for widowed life alone.
