While this theory may be true of a small minority of the population, it is not applicable to the vast majority. The novel in question, Smithereens, is a short story anthology intended to promote a more thoughtful approach to learning. Though the words in this novel might be said to manipulate young people’s minds to the point where they commit suicide, but they might equally open their eyes to an alternative approach of life. Adolf Hitler understood and abused the power of his words, to influence his rise to power and then the further persecution of the Jewish people to fulfil his twisted ideology of his ultimate Arian race. Hitler’s strong charismatic manner of speaking and the propaganda of his Nazi party drew people to listen to his words, and interpret the lies that he was saying as the truth, for the way they should live their lives, and make changes to create the perfect Arian race. In Marcus Zusak’s novel The Book Thief Hans Senior selflessly and painstakingly teaches Leisel to read. By doing this he is releasing her mind to a world where she can understand the true meaning of the words. Therefore Hans unlocks Leisel’s mind to the true horrific messages that come across in Hitler’s speeches and Hitler’s writings in Mein Kampf. By teaching Leisel to read, Hans also frees her mind and distracts her from feeling guilt for her brother’s death, he helps Leisel to learn that she could have done nothing to save her brother, death took him and it was his destiny to die on the train.
