Stradlater's Irony

Character/ quote: When first seeing the paper that Holden wrote for him, Stradlater says, “For Chrissake, Holden. This is about a goddam baseball glove” (p. 46),
Reveals about situation: This quote has a much deeper meaning of irony. Specifically, Stradlater is the football star and he appears to have it all going for him; however, this is not necessarily true. Stradlater does not have compassion, intelligence, nor motivation. On the other hand, Holden is flunking out of school, but has a much deeper level of creativity and intelligence. Holden’s problem, though, is simply the fact that he also lacks motivation and foresight and does not apply himself to the fullest of his ability.
