He goes to a bar in the restaurant where he continuously tries to pick up women. The room is filled with "old, show-offy-looking guys and their dates" (69) except for three women who, in Holden’s opinion, were pretty ugly except for the blond one. Holden said yes and lied about his age. The when the prostitute came to his room, he changed his mind and asked her to leave. Another example of Holden’s hypocrisy is that he criticizes people but still asks them to sit down and have a little drink and talk! The only good thing that he does is that he visits his sister Phoebe once in awhile. He says she’s the only person he truly loves. It doesn’t stop here, he made numerous mistakes throughout the novel. One mistake he made is, when he was kicked out of Pencey, he didn’t tell his parents and when the found out that he was kicked out, he got in more trouble. Thinking before making a decision is a good thing to do. Another example is when Sally was crying, he started laughing for no reason, and that made Sally feel even worst. He needs to think about the consequences before doing something…

The first half of Catcher In The Rye focuses on Holden living at a boarding school called Pencey. He has flunked school, meaning that the school has asked him to leave because he only just passed English and failed his other five subjects. He speaks of his room mates in a different matter to that of his family. The main two boys he describes are; Ackley - “a pimply classmate with poor hygiene who constantly barges into the room,” and Stradlater - who is an enemy of Ackleys. Stradlater is “handsome” and is generally one of Holden’s closest mates. However Holden does pick out Stradlater’s flaws when he says that Stradlater is “self absorbed.” Despite their flaws, Holden is…

Stradlater is perceived as a phony because of the way he acts in front of certain people, Holden constantly attempts to act and seem older and more mature than he truly is and he constantly puts on that act to be taken seriously. Holden wants to believe he is an adult and loves to act as if he is superior to everyone else, when in reality, he is just a teenage boy. When given advice about something, he does not even take it into consideration because like a lot of teenagers, Holden believes he knows what is best. While trying to be an adult, Holden believes he is mature enough to do anything, including hiring a prostitute for his room even though he says no in the end and realizes he is not ready for…

Stradlater “thinks he’s a real hot-shot...[and everyone’s] crazy about [him],” so he is “always asking [Holden] to do him a favor” because he thinks that “[Holden’s] just dying to do [him] a favor” (27-28). Holden “sees through [Stradlater’s facade] quickly...clearly...[and] unforgivingly” (Menand) and is not so easily influenced by others’ opinions of Stradlater as the “handsomest guy in the Western hemisphere” (27). Living in such close proximity to Stradlater, Holden has seen the true Stradlater, the one that is only interested in “very sexy stuff” and “madly in love with himself” (32, 27). Because we see Stradlater through Holden’s eyes, we, in turn, see Stradlater for a womanizing, superficial, conceited, phony. We wholeheartedly believe Holden because for everything he states about Stradlater, he shows it. Holden doesn’t care that Stradlater “[isn’t] too bad,” which is almost a compliment to Holden, because it’s what Stradlater does and thinks that determines Holden’s view about…

Holden is a teenager who refuses to grow up because he is afraid of gaining the responsibilities that come with it. So, Holden struggles hard to stay childish. For example, he does not want to take responsibility to communicate with others that may want to help him. He refuses to go home and confront his parents and face the consequences. Along with this, he also pulls the childish silent treatment toward his parents; because that is the only knife he has to hurt them:” She would not be the ones that answered the phone. My parents would be the ones. So that was out." He is afraid to talk to people close to him because they will be critical to him. This would also explain his lack of interaction with Jane Gallagher: "I kept standing there, of giving old Jane a buzz- I mean calling her long distance at B.M. The only reason I did not call him was because I was not in the mood." Since he is afraid of interaction with people close to him, he tries to get strangers to talk to, so the conversations he has with them won't go too into depth. He does not want to face the world of reality. Holden asks his cab driver, who is a complete stranger to him, for a cocktail once he's done driving Holden to the Edmont Hotel: "Would you care to stop on the way and join me for a cocktail" Therefore, Holden will try to get some random stranger for a beer, as they won't criticize him.…
