Vivaldi, Four Seasons: Ritornello Form
The piece that I enjoyed the most was Vivaldi, Four Seasons: Spring. Four Season is a ritornello form, where it unifies the theme of the spring season. When the orchestra is all playing together it gives you the feeling that you are standing outside on a beautiful spring day. Then when the sting soloist comes in they represent the different elements of spring. From the birds to the sky to the flow of the brooks to even the thunder and lightning of a spring storm, it is all represented in the violinist solos.

The next piece I choose was Handel, Water Music: Alla Hornpipe. When I listen to this piece it somewhat gives me a joyful mood. With the pieces fast tempo, I can imagine the people of this time listening to this in the streets during

The first movement of the composition begins with a solo from only the strings family. A soft, consistent melody is played and the violin dominates the other instruments in this piece. The tone color at the beginning of this piece is relatively light which symbolizes the characteristics of a nuturing mother. As expected from a classical piece, the dynamics of the piece suddenly change, and there is a slight crescendo in the piece during the following measures of the composition. The tempo of the composition grows quicker in pace which portrays another chapter in the story, signalizng another movement of the piece. A violinist them performs a solo that plays alot that is also quick, yet play alot on the concept of pitch. It can be heard that the violin goes from very low ranges to fairly high range in pitch to emphasize the great amount of emotion in the piece.…

Composed by Antonio Vivaldi,” L’inverno” (Winter) is the fourth concerto of a set of violin concertos named “Le Quattro Stagioni” (The four seasons) that belong to a more complex work titled “Il cimento dell’armonia e dell’inventione" (The Contest of Harmony and Invention) (Grasmeier) . The structure of this piece is in ternary form. The piece begins with a fast tempo and then slows down to finish fast and loud again. Vivaldi makes use of variety in this “Winter” composition through dynamic when the music suddenly changes its volume and also through changes in pace. Although this concert is performed only by string instruments (mainly violins) he also achieves variety by using different techniques among the instruments (like pizzicato).…

Once the violin enters the music feels so heavy, as if all of us in the audience almost have to hold our breaths from the sadness and tragedy that is being displayed. As the movement goes on the notes get higher, but are not relieved from any seriousness. This is an amazing example of how music can display tone without a single word or explanation. Grace Mei-En Ho, “an active soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States and Asia”, executes excellent technique during the extremely low parts of this movement. This movement was my favorite because it invoked an intense feeling that I could easily see wasn’t only felt by…

Vivaldi wrote it while in Mantua. He wanted to explore landscapes and scenes in music that would convey traits of human behavior (Mellor). At the same time, he would preserve the concerto form of one soloist playing against a bigger ensemble. Unlike popular belief that descriptive music was inferior and regressive, Vivaldi wanted to prove that it could be sophisticated and taken seriously as well as advance the cause of the concerto (Mellor). He succeeded in his exploration of compositional techniques. Each movement established a mood against narrative events that played out such as barking dogs, drunken dancers, or buzzing insects. This delivered elegance and originality. Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons has, and continues to, influence many composers.…

Within any great musical composition there lies many instances of musical emotion that stirs the soul and creates within an individual, a sense of strong connections with both the piece and the composer. In this great masterpiece, Beethoven has penned such a work that offers an individual senses of both the darkness and lightness of musical emotion contained within several musical passages while maintaining the softness and power of light, melodic runs. Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony truly captures his musical style and features four movements, each with their own individual musical message. The emotional impact of this masterpiece can be felt in various ways as the listener releases the tensions of the world and embraces the genius of Beethoven’s…

The music was sweet and pleasing to my ears and made me very happy. The musical style used in this piece was very fast and loud and helped to bring about a joyful moment. The soloist on the violin was a male who did a magnificent piece in the way he manipulated the four string instrument. He was also supported by the piano which also complimented the fast and loud pace musical piece. It was fascinating to me see and listen how both musicians played both instruments in harmony to make a variety of musical sound that went from fast, loud to soft and then quiet without throwing each other off course.…

This movement sounds like he was painting a beautiful picture. It has some kinds of romantic emotion, but Beethoven described it by a sorrowful way. Beethoven composed this movement use lots of sixteenth notes, from one part to others. The theme sixteenth notes were formed by A.F.E.D. This movement was totally different with the second movement, and makes a confrontation with the first movement. This also can give expression to Beethoven have a firm belief in the struggle for victory. However, this movement comes to an abrupt end. This makes people to reverie. There are still having hardships in the endeavor. Like the end of the Shakespeare’s Tempest, the protagonist subdued his foes. However, he let the past be forgotten, and forgave all of his foes. This also gave expression to the helpless of can’t triumph over the societal forces and limitations. This explained the ending of Beethoven’s tempest sonata and Shakespeare’s Tempest has some relevance.…

The first section of the concert was the most delightful and satisfying to listen to. The violins and woodwinds were the main melody for most of the piece. Both instrument made the texture of the beginning very calm and satisfying by playing legato notes that gradually crescendo/decrescendo. The texture made me to feel relaxed and at ease. I would describe the text painting as a calm ocean, the feeling of drifting in calm water. Half way through the piece, the clarinets and flutes began to follow the entire orchestra and its smooth tempo, which inevitably became louder and more powerful near the end of the piece.…

One of my favorite pieces of music is Dido’s Lament, from Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. The slow, sorrowful melody is hauntingly beautiful, and though it contains few lyrics, the text infers a rich backstory of romantic love and a grieving, broken heart. Purcell uses several elements archetypal to Baroque era music styling to convey a dramatic story of emotional extremes, from love to heartache; a concept prevalent over all human cultures and generations. Henry Purcell was considered one of the most significant English composers of the Baroque era. His collection of works is diverse, including music both sacred and secular, and he composed for multiple venues, such as the stage, the royal court, and the church.…

The first piece started on three strings playing together in dissonance harmony with a gloomy mood. Quickly afterwards, the violin led a main theme in the introduction part. Since this piece formed a theme and variation, the piece’s main them was repeated over and over, but it was changed each time in terms of harmony, dynamics, and mood and so on. According to the program note, the piece consists of seven variations on a folk-tune (“community chamber concert”). Whenever the changed theme was played, I felt like I heard totally new pieces. The main theme plucked by the violin was the most interesting part to me because the tone color of the violin was more lively compared to that of other…

The first song I heard is Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture, composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. It is written at 1880, a romantic period music. It is a sonata allegro form, which consist an exposition, a development, and a recapitulation. However, it is hard for me to find connection between three parts when I was at the concert. Moreover, I did not realize there is three parts until I did the research after the concert. I was really into music and picturing the Romeo and Julia scene in my mind when I heard the symphony playing this piece.…

The first piece of music was Spring from The Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi. This work is a violin concerto. The first movement was in allegro and began in the major key. It started out in a monophonic texture and with the theme of the piece. The pitch and tempo of the work is designed to bring about feelings of springtime. The notes are high in pitch and very short in duration. It could be described as "fleeting". The theme reappears, so the piece could be in ritornello form. The second movement was largo e pianissimo. It starts off in a minor key, and there is a definite ground bass throughout the movement with a melody of higher-pitched notes above it. The tempo is much slower, mostly because of the presence of the ground bass, and the ground bass has the same recurring theme over and over again. The third movement is back in allegro, and the tempo is faster. The beginning of this movement sounds like a combination of movements I and II, with the deep, slow tempo of the ground bass of II with the light-hearted, distinct, "fleeting" tempo and pitch of I. Overall in movement III, the key alternates between major and minor. The key is in major when the ground bass leaves and transitions to minor when the ground bass reemerges.…
